MACC Open To Probing KLIA Aerotrain

MACC.jpg The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) says it’s ready to investigate the KLIA Aerotrain project if there are signs of corruption or misuse of power.

Its chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said no investigation papers have been opened yet on the multi-million-ringgit project, which has drawn criticism following a series of breakdowns since its relaunch.

“So far, we haven’t received any complaints or information about the matter. If it falls under our jurisdiction, we will definitely investigate,” he said in a BH report.

Azam added that not every issue tied to the Aerotrain necessarily involves corruption.

“Whether or not there’s wrongdoing depends on the nature of the offence. Don’t put everything on MACC as some issues may be governance-related. But if there’s corruption involved, we’ll investigate,” he affirmed.

His comments came a day after Transport Minister Anthony Loke ordered the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) to open an investigation paper against Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) following yet another Aerotrain failure.

Loke said the ministry takes the recurring disruptions seriously, especially since the Aerotrain has been operating for months.

“I’ve instructed APAD to investigate MAHB as the operator of the Aerotrain service

"At the start, we understood MAHB needed time to adjust. But now that the service has been running for several months, APAD will take firm action for every incident moving forward,” he stressed.

The Aerotrain, part of MAHB’s RM456 million KLIA Regeneration Plan, was relaunched on July 1, 2025, after a 28-month suspension for upgrades. Yet between July and September, 19 breakdowns were recorded, mostly due to power, signal, and human errors.

Despite being fitted with the new driverless Alstom Innovia APM 300R system, the frequent failures have frustrated travellers and renewed calls for stronger oversight and accountability.
