BYD’s Kei Car Car Puts Pressure on Japan’s Automakers

Following the debut of BYD’s first Kei car - the Racco - at the recent Japan Mobility Show 2025 (JMS 2025), the ripples in Japan’s compact car segment are only getting bigger.

Suzuki Motor president Toshihiro Suzuki has openly acknowledged that BYD’s arrival in the Kei segment isn’t just another new model in town, it is a wake-up call.

While he welcomed BYD’s choice to build a car to Japan’s K-Car standard and spoke about “learning from each other,” he did not mince words on the threat ahead.

Consumers in Japan, he noted, are increasingly open to Chinese brands, and that shift is now very real threat for home-grown names.

Adding to that, BYD has just scored another milestone in Japan. The Seal EV has won the Japan Annual EV Awards, making it two consecutive victories following the Dolphin’s win last year.

Beating contenders like the Honda N-VAN e: and Hyundai IONIQ 5 N, the result shows that recognition for BYD in Japan is not only coming from buyers, but also from industry insiders.

On BYD’s side, the tone remains diplomatic. Liu Xueliang, who oversees BYD’s Asia-Pacific auto business, played down the idea of a direct fight, saying the goal is simply to give Japanese buyers more choice, not to go head-to-head with domestic champions.

Yet the timing and product strategy suggest otherwise. Kei cars are the beating heart of Japan’s market, and stepping into that arena speaks volumes.

BYD may have only formally entered the Japanese passenger car market in 2022, but momentum is building. Sales have already surpassed last year’s total nine months into 2025, with models like the Atto 3, Dolphin, Seal and Sealion forming the base of a growing EV footprint.

Steady, not explosive, is the company’s own target. The long game is very much the plan.

The Kei segment remains massive, accounting for roughly 40% of Japan’s car market and dominated by long-time favourites like the Honda N-Box and Suzuki Spacia.
