The Ministry Of Transport is pushing ahead with major improvements to public transport and road safety as part of its ongoing modernisation plan.

Its minister Anthony Loke said the country continues to strengthen its regional rail presence after hosting the 45th ASEAN Railways CEO Conference in Kuala Lumpur, which focused on greener transport and stronger ASEAN collaboration under the 13th Malaysia Plan.

Locally, the BAS.MY network has expanded to Kota Kinabalu and Kuala Terengganu, introducing new routes, accessible mini buses, and free rides for senior citizens, students, and persons with disabilities under the Stage Bus Transformation Programme.

Another major milestone was the launch of the Gombak Integrated Terminal by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

"The RM307 million terminal links express buses and the Kelana Jaya LRT line and will later connect with the ECRL. It is designed to serve 25,000 passengers daily and boost east-west connectivity," he said, during the ministry's monthly meeting.

To improve road safety, MOT has introduced several key measures. From Oct 1, all heavy vehicles registered from 2015 onwards must be fitted with Speed Limitation Devices.

"Older vehicles will follow in 2026, with non-compliant ones risking inspection failure and suspension," Loke added.

Elsewhere, JPJ officers nationwide will use body-worn cameras starting Nov to ensure transparency and protect enforcement integrity.

A new traffic summons system will also begin on Jan 1, 2026, introducing the “The Less You Delay, The Less You Pay” approach to encourage prompt payments and reduce special discount campaigns.

"These efforts, combined with new initiatives under Budget 2026, reflect our commitment to safer, more efficient transport," he stated, adding that upcoming plans include tax incentives for taxis, free motorcycle licences for youth, and improved mobility services for persons with disabilities.
