- Johor Bahru Set To Launch Free Self-Driving Bus In 2026
Johor Bahru is set to get a high-tech boost with a free self-driving bus planned to help residents and tourists move around the city with ease.
The autonomous shuttle is part of three smart city initiatives by the Johor Bahru City Council (MBJB), funded through RM2.78 million from the Digital Ministry.

Mayor Datuk Mohd Haffiz Ahmad said the council is currently finalising procurement and hopes the 20-seater bus will start operating in the first quarter of next year, just in time for Visit Johor 2026.
"MBJB is working with Tourism Johor and the Johor Public Transport Corporation to plan the most convenient routes, likely serving the city centre, though the exact path is yet to be confirmed.
"The bus, costing around RM800,000, will use sensors, AI, and 5G technology to navigate safely," he said.

In addition to the autonomous bus, the council is enhancing city monitoring with mobile, solar-powered CCTV units and AI-equipped drones.
