- ECRL Launch Hinges On System Integration, Jan 2027 Target Maintained

The East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) is still on track to begin operations in January 2027, with the Transport Ministry stressing that system readiness and not just physical construction, will determine when trains start running.
Its minister Anthony Loke said construction progress remains steady, but emphasised that rail projects are far more complex than laying tracks. Critical phases such as system integration, software alignment and testing have yet to begin, and these will ultimately decide operational readiness.
“Rail systems are not just about the tracks. What matters most is whether the entire system works together safely and reliably,” Loke said during a press conference after the Transport Ministry’s 2026 New Year Address.

Drawing from past experience, Loke noted that the most challenging stages of rail projects typically come after construction, citing operational issues faced by the KLIA Terminal 1 aerotrain and LRT3, where system and software problems delayed or disrupted services despite completed infrastructure.
According to the minister, system integration testing is often the most demanding phase, as it ensures signalling, communications, rolling stock and safety systems operate in sync before passenger services begin.
Despite testing and inspections yet to commence, he remains confident in the current timeline and is sticking with the January 2027 target, based on lessons learned from previous rail projects.

As of October 2025, the ECRL project had reached 89% completion. Once operational, the line will connect Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang and Selangor, significantly improving inter-state connectivity along the east coast.
The Transport Ministry said it will continue close monitoring of the project to ensure all technical requirements are met, with safety, reliability and smooth operations identified as the top priorities ahead of launch.
