Proton's New Blacked-Out X50 Sport Edition Looks Badass, But There's A Huge Catch

At the Kuala Lumpur International Mobility Show (KLIMS 2026), the national carmaker officially previewed a special, customized variant of its updated SUV: the Proton X50 Sport Edition. Following the massive popularity of the previous limited-run trims, this new iteration builds directly on the freshly facelifted model line with an aggressive, stealthy aesthetic that screams performance.
It looks mean, it looks premium, and it is easily one of the biggest crowd-pleasers at the booth. But before you break out your checkbook, there is a pretty massive twist you need to know first.
The "Catch": It is Strictly A Show Car (For Now)

Yes, the single biggest catch is that you cannot actually buy or place an order for this car right now.
Proton unveiled this kitted-up beast strictly as a show car for the event. If this dark, performance-oriented aesthetic feels familiar, that's because the styling treatment heavily mimics the design of the previous Sport Edition version showcased back at KLIMS 2024. Just like its predecessor, this latest version is strictly for viewing at its public debut, though it could eventually go on sale later in the X50's lifecycle.
The good news? If history repeats itself, these special previews often make it to production to shake up the market. When it does finally drop, there's a strong chance it will follow Proton's classic playbook of offering highly exclusive, limited-edition runs, much like the 1,000-unit special batches they’ve rolled out in the past.
4 Things We Do Know About The New Stealth Mode Upgrade
If you're willing to wait out the launch delay, here is a breakdown of the styling tweaks making this Sport Edition a total head-turner on the show floor:
1. The "Murdered Out" Dark Knight Aesthetic


The show car is bathed in a deep, glossy Quartz Black paint job. To complete the stealth theme, all the exterior trim sections, which are finished in contrasting matte silver on the standard showroom X50, have received a full gloss-black delete treatment.
2. A Bold, Bespoke Aerodynamic Body Kit

Proton didn't just stop at a new coat of paint; they bolted on a dedicated, aggressive aerodynamic package to give the B-segment SUV a sharper street presence. The new Sport Edition features a lower front splitter lip designed with sharp, integrated side endplates.

Move to the back, and the vehicle sports a matching aggressive rear diffuser setup, purpose-built to inject a younger, highly expressive, and much sportier aesthetic character into the highly popular model line.
3. Gloss-Black 18-Inch Wheels & Crimson Accents

The standard two-tone alloy wheels are entirely gone, replaced by massive 18-inch alloy wheels finished in solid gloss black to match the body. To keep the design from fading completely into the shadows, subtle crimson red highlights break up the darkness across the front splitter, side skirts, and rear diffuser.
4. The Interior Is Locked Shut

Proton kept the cabin doors firmly locked and off-limits during its public debut. However, standard industry expectations point toward a dual-tone layout anchored by the Flagship’s premium 14.6-inch central infotainment touchscreen and 8.88-inch digital cluster.
That said, there is a very strong chance the production variant could include sporty red highlights behind that tinted glass, meaning we might see racing-style red seatbelts, contrasting red stitching on the leatherette upholstery, and an embossed variant logo to match the dark exterior theme.
The "All Show, No Extra Go" Reality Check
Despite the aggressive stance and performance-oriented body pieces, do not expect a racetrack machine under the skin. The mechanical core of this X50 may remain completely unchanged from the standard model line.

Under the hood lives the standard 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine, pumping out a respectable 181 hp and 290 Nm of torque.
Power is routed exclusively to the front wheels via Proton's smooth 7-speed wet dual-clutch transmission (DCT), allowing you to hit the 0-100 km/h sprint in a snappy 7.6 seconds. It’s still plenty fast for overtaking on the North-South Expressway, but it won’t give you any extra mechanical edge over a regular X50 Flagship.
Which Variant Will It Actually Be Based On?
Proton is staying completely tight-lipped regarding the final pricing or variant architecture. While the show car features the prominent rear spoiler and 18-inch wheels native to the top-spec Flagship (currently retailing at RM113,300), don't assume that’s what we will get.

Historically, Proton has thrown us a curveball with these special edition models. The previous iteration of the Sport Edition actually bypassed the range-topper entirely, opting to build itself on top of the mid-tier Premium variant to keep the final retail price highly accessible to everyday buyers. We will have to wait and see if they replicate that budget-friendly strategy this time around.
