Mercedes-Benz EQS 580 4MATIC SUV

The all-new Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV, the latest addition to the company’s all-electric EQ portfolio, officially launched in Malaysia.

Akin to the EQS and EQE sedans, it is the third model built on the Mercedes Electric Vehicle Architecture (EVA2) platform.

Fully-imported (CBU), the sole variant offered, EQS 580 4MATIC, is priced at MYR 699,888, on-the-road, without insurance, and with 10% sales tax (SST).

Each purchase includes a standard four-year/unlimited-mileage vehicle warranty, and a 10-year/250,000 KM main drive battery warranty.

The EQS SUV sees a digitally futuristic cockpit, adorned with the Electric Art Line Interior treatment. 

It features soft-touch panels in Space Grey ARTICO man-made leather, with NEOTEX grain and red stitching.

Commanding the dashboard is the single pane 56-Inch Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) Hyperscreen. Three units, driver, centre and passenger. 

Elsewhere, it gets a full-width slim vent band at the top, which is paired with protruding, turbine-designed air-conditioning nozzles fitted at each corner.

Overall, it is well designed, very driver- and passenger-oriented. Every accessibility is within reach and are purposefully arranged. 

Featuring 1/3 of the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) Hyperscreen, it gets a 12.3-Inch LCD digital multi-function setup with an Augmented Reality (AR) Head-Up Display (HUD) instrument cluster.

Luxuriously designed, the seven-seater (2-3-2 configuration) gets the Electric Art Line Interior treatment. 

It sees upholstery in Black/Space Grey Nappa leather, accentuated by brown open-pore magnolia wood trims.

Fitted are Comfort Seats (row - first, second) with electronic adjustments, lumbar support, multi-contour, comfort armrests, luxury head restraints, climate control and memory functions. 

The second-row adds-on a Rear Comfort Package, an Easy Entry function (third-row access), and a 40:20:40 split-fold configuration. 

Meanwhile, the third-row sees a two-seater bench seat, with luxury head restraints, comfort armrests, and a 50:50 split-fold configuration.

Completing the environment are Velour floor mats, a panoramic glass roof framed by a black fabric headliner, and Ambient Lighting Plus (64-colour active ambient lights).

Due to its largely designed body, it offers plenty of head, shoulder and leg rooms, thus front, middle and rear occupants get ample space.

Mounted is a three-spoke steering wheel, wrapped in black Nappa leather. 

It features multi-switches (media, vehicle settings), electronic adjustments (tilt, telescopic), and galvanised paddle shifters.

Aiding the drive is an Electric Power Steering (EPS) system.

Numerous storage areas. E.g., centre console partitioned spaces with under-stowage, a large-sized glove box, and seat back and side door pockets.

There are six flex bottle holders, strategically located around the cabin.

Equipped with the USB Package Plus, it comes with multiple USB ports placed around the cabin. It also has a 12-V socket, and two wireless chargers.

The boot comes with the EASY-PACK tailgate feature, enabling a contactless function that opens up to 195-Litres (up - all rows), 800-Litres (down - third row), 2,020-Litres (down - second, third rows) of load space.

Weighing in at 2,810 KG, the EQS SUV stands at 5,125 MM long, 2,157 MM wide, 1,718 MM tall, and with a wheelbase spanning 3,210 MM.

Commandingly luxurious, its exterior has the typical EQ styling, parading an overall seamless design with smooth and clean surfaces.

The front-end sees a bonnet with the Merc’s Power domes and Black Panel radiator grille, with a light band connecting the headlamps.

Accentuating the layout is the AMG Line Exterior kit, featuring an aggressive bumper with large side and lower intakes, and black trimmings.

Solid and curvaceously sculpted, the rear-end merges a slightly sloping all-black roofline with fairly muscular quarter panels.

Featured is a boot-lid spoiler, a bulbous tailgate, and a black lower bumper with a slim and chromed-out diffuser.

Elsewhere, the side profile gets 3D chrome stripped window trims, flush door handles, and illuminated running boards with rubber studs.

Angular, fitted is a Digital Light headlamp setup with projection function, Adaptive High Beam Assist Plus, and three-hexagonal-shaped LED Daytime Running Lights (DRL).

The tail lamps are in a full-width and slim light bar design, featuring curved three-dimensional helix light graphics. Fitted are full LED units.

Electronically-powered (fold, adjust), the side mirrors have turn- and blind spot-indicators, as well as an automatic dimming function.

Equipped is a set of ventilated disc brakes (front, rear). Drive is aided by an Electronic Parking Brake with Auto Brake Hold.

Completing the look is a set of 22-Inch AMG light-alloy rims, multi-spoke high-gloss black with a high-sheen finish, rubbered-up in 275/40 R22 tyres.

The EQS SUV features the following sets of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).

Grouped under Driving Assistance Plus Package are DISTRONIC Plus Brake Assist System (BAS) and PRE-SAFE Brake, Extended automatic Re-start in traffic jams, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Active Steering Assist, Evasive Manoeuvre Support, PRE-SAFE Impulse Side, Rear sensors for lane departure assistant, and URBAN GUARD 360-degree Vehicle Protection Plus. Under Parking Package, included is a 360-degree camera, a transparent bonnet (ground view), and Active Parking Assist with PARKTRONIC. 

Others are blind spot monitoring, Adaptive High Beam Assist Plus, Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with stop and go, and lane centring assist with Level two semi-autonomous driving.

Passive safety comprises nine airbags (driver-passenger, driver knee, front side, front-rear curtain), airbag disable function, seat belts (reminders, pretensioners, anchors), ISOFIX, Door Opening Warning (DOW), Electric Parking Brake with Auto Brake Hold (EPB), parking cameras (reverse, 360-degree), parking sensors (six - front, rear), auto-dimming rear-view mirrors (interior, exterior), impact beams (side, front), PRE-SAFE system, interior monitoring system, Break-in resistant heat and noise-insulated laminated safety glass, TIREFIT, Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), anti-theft alarm system and engine immobiliser.

Drive modes available via DYNAMIC SELECT are ECO, COMFORT, SPORT, INDIVIDUAL and OFFROAD. 

Whereas, via Recuperative Braking are D+, D, D-, Gliding (Shift Pedals), DAuto, and Eco Assist (One-Pedal-Driving).

Featuring 2/3-individually of the MBUX Hyperscreen, equipped is a 17.7-Inch central display and another 12.3-Inch passenger display OLED touchscreens. 

Furthering that is the MBUX High-End rear entertainment system, featuring two 11.6-Inch screens, with a 7.0-Inch MBUX tablet and two wireless headsets. 

The unit provides Mercedes me connect services, over-the-air software update, augmented reality navigation, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, MBUX Interior Assistant, fingerprint scanner, and voice/gesture/steering controls.

Entertainment is channelled through a 15-speaker setup of the Dolby Atmos Burmester 3D surround sound system (710 W). 

Fused in the EQS SUV is an electric drivetrain (eATS), featuring a dual-motor setup, front- and rear-mounted, generating 544 HP/400 KW and 858 NM of torque.

It gets a single-speed fixed ratio automatic transmission.

Power is transmitted to all four wheels (4WD), via the 4MATIC All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system, featuring a Torque Shift function and rear-axle steering.

It accelerates from 0 to 100 KM/H in 4.6 seconds and has a 210 KM/H top speed.

Juicing-up the e-motors is a 396 V Lithium-Ion battery (floor-mounted) with 12 cell modules and an energy capacity of 108.4 KWH. This provides up to 615 KM of driving range (WLTP).

Charging via AC at 22 KW, enables a 0% to 100% State of Charge (SoC) in five and a half hours, while via DC at 200 KW a 10% to 80% SoC in 31 minutes. 

Charging via AC (Type 2 connection) at 22 KW enables a 0% to 100% State of Charge (SoC) in five and a half hours, while via DC (CCS2 connection) at 200 KW enables a 10% to 80% SoC in 31 minutes.

Courtesy of the Mercedes AIRMATIC with Adaptive Damping System (ADS+) air suspension installed, it provides an outstanding ride even on rough terrains.

Also, it controls the level of the vehicle to vary in line with the speed, which in turn increases the range when driving fast.

Notably, its ground clearance is 25 MM raisable at speeds of up to 80 KM/H, while in Comfort and Sport modes, it is automatically lowered by 10 MM and 15 MM, respectively.

The vehicle delivers a high-power density, high efficiency and high-power reliability. Ultimately, it has superior roadholding, great handling stability and agility at high speeds.

The build is very well equipped to offer a high level of NVH comfort (Noise, Vibration, Harshness). 

Part of the aero-acoustic measures used at reducing wind, tyre and road noises include the installation of heat-, noise-insulating and infrared-reflecting acoustic laminated glass.

Overall, the cabin is able to suppress unwanted noises well and make them barely noticeable, in most of the day-to-day driving environment.
