Not long after its worldwide introduction in June this year, UMW Toyota has introduced the refreshed 2020 Toyota Hilux facelift in Malaysia. Now in its second facelift for the eighth generation, the Toyota Hilux will be offered in five variations (2.4 single taxi MT, 2.4E, 2.4G, 2.4V, and Rogue), with prices beginning at RM93K for the single-cab workhorse variation.
What’s Outside?
The main contrast of the 2020 Toyota Hilux exterior styling is at the front, characterised by a bigger three-dimensional hexagonal grille, and flanked by the slimmer headlights with a totally new illumination architecture. Further down, the bumper has likewise been totally overhauled, with new fog lights housing along the edge.
The top-of-the-range Rogue variant, alongside the 2.4V variant, gets considerably more flair on the exterior. These include Bi-LED headlights and daytime-running lights, and LED taillights – the latter being carried over from the previous generation in the lower variants.
On the Rogue variation, the exterior flair is brought to an entirely new level with a substantially more aggressive front-end, including a darkened grille that extends over the entire height of the front fascia, along with more prominent skid plates and fog lamp housing trim that extends to form the over fenders on the wheel arches.
The Rogue variation additionally gets a variant-exclusive matte-grey coloured wing mirrors and door handles, as well as the tailgate garnish and body-coloured bumpers at the rear. All variations of the 2020 Toyota Hilux facelift will receive newly-designed 17- and 18-inch wheels with new finishes.
What’s Inside?
While the overall interior design is essentially indistinguishable from the outgoing model, the 2.4V and 2.8 Rogue variants do get a couple of updates to improve the general premium experience of the cabin. These include:
Updated Optitron instrument cluster with new blue graphics 4.2-inch multi-info display
6.25-inch infotainment display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
Leather seats (with grey accents on Rogue)
8-way power-adjustable driver seats
Digital Video Recorder (Dashcam)
The new instrument cluster and infotainment display are also available on the 2.4G MT variant, while the 2.8 Rogue variant gains additional blue ambient lighting on the door trims.
How Fast?
There are two engine options available for the 2020 Toyota Hilux facelift – 2.8-litre and 2.4-litre turbodiesel mills. While the engines are carried over from the outgoing model, the two engines have received some upgrades in this facelift update, however just the 2.8-litre engine on the Rogue variation gets a bump in power yield.
The 2.4 single cab and 2.4G variants are offered with a six-speed manual transmission, while the other double cab variants – including the Rogue – are paired exclusively with a six-speed automatic transmission.
In terms of upgrades, the two engines come fitted with a new Variable Nozzle Turbocharger (VNT) with new pre-exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) intercooler,as well as an increased common-rail fuel injection pressure. Besides the increase in power on the 2.8-litre engine, the two engines now boast enhanced fuel efficiency, with a 4% improvement on the 2.8-litre, and 5% on the 2.4-litre.
The result of these new upgrades will see the service interval for the Hilux increased from 5,000 km/3 months to 10,000 km/6 months, reducing both service intervals and the overall cost of ownership.
Other mechanical upgrades include a new Variable Flow Control (VFC) steering rack which changes the weight of the steering depending on the speed, as well as a reworked suspension setup with retuned dampers, leaf suspension mounts, and cabin mounts for improved ride comfort.
The Rogue and 2.4V variant also gets a new automatic limited-slip differential (Auto LSD) on the rear axle to help with traction in 2WD mode, working in conjunction with the improved active traction control system.
How Safe?
The 2020 Toyota Hilux Rogue is outfitted with the Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) advanced driver safety system which incorporates Pre-collision System autonomous emergency braking, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control from 30 km/h, and Lane Departure Alert with Yaw Assist, which utilises the brakes on the inner wheels to correct the direction of the car automatically.
