Fast Facts: Eighth Gen Hyundai Sonata Launched in Malaysia
Hyundai Sime Darby Motors (HDSM) has officially launched the 8th generation Hyundai Sonata in Malaysia. The car will contend in a used-to-be popular D-segment, thanks to the popularity of SUVs.
This means that fully-imported D-segment products are now breaching the RM200k mark, close to entry-level German cars. Under such conditions, does the new Sonata have what it takes to find new homes in Malaysia?
What’s Outside?
For a D-segment sedan aimed typically at executives climbing the corporate ladder, the Hyundai Sonata cuts an extremely striking figure. Featuring Hyundai’s latest Sensuous Sportiness design language, it’s swoopy 4-door coupe look is based on the Le Fil Rouge Concept shown in Geneva in 2018.
The most distinctive styling element would be the connected chrome trim that outlines the headlamps and the windows. Using laser-cut micro perforation, the surrounding ‘chrome trim’ at the headlights doubles as DRL when the car is started, Hyundai rightly calls it Hidden Lighting Lamps.
Though the styling is characterized by strong, bold curves, the details are equally pleasing to the keen eye - the knurling effect on interior knobs are replicated on the hubcaps of 18-inch wheels. The small aerodynamic fins on the tail lamps have quite a character too.

What’s Inside?
The lavish aesthetics are mirrored inside. Named “Beautifully Smart” by Hyundai, the futuristic looking steering wheel is rather inviting to hold, at least to this writer’s eyes. Clad in leather, the dashboard and air con vents are lowered for an uncluttered view - even the gear lever has made way for individual buttons.
Equipment that buyers expect of a product in this segment is presented with visual panache:
- Highly-customisable 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster with camera display
- 8.0-inch display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto with split-screen view
- Panoramic Sunroof
- Qi wireless charging pad with cooling fan
- Electric Parking Brake
- Power-adjustable driver seat

How Fast?
The Hyundai Sonata is only available with a 2.5-litre SmartStream G2.5 power plant. It’s also the first model to utilise the brand’s third-generation modular vehicle platform, it has a multiload path structure which increases energy absorption during collisions.
- Engine: 2.5-litre naturally-aspirated inline-four
- Transmission: 6-speed automatic
- Drivetrain: Front engine, front wheel driven
- Max horsepower: 180 hp @ 6,000 rpm
- Max torque: 232 Nm @ 4,000 rpm

How Safe?
Unlike the lower-priced Kona, the Hyundai Sonata does not come with SmartSense advanced safety features, but that is not to say it’s lacking in this department:
- Six airbags
- 360-degree around view monitor
- Blind-Spot View Monitor which displays the side views on the digital instrument cluster when turn indicators are activated
- Blind-spot collision warning
- Anti-lock Brake System with Brake Assist System
- Electronic Stability Control and Vehicle Stability Management
- Hill-start Assist Control

How Much? Fully imported from Korea, the Hyundai Sonata breaches the double-century mark at RM206,888. However, first 50 units of the Sonata will be offered at an introductory price of RM189,888, inclusive of the sales tax exemption which is effective until the end of 2020.
