Fast Facts: Mitsubishi Xpander Launched in Malaysia
Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia (MMM) has launched the 7-seater Mitsubishi Xpander which goes up against the reliable Toyota Avanza and sporty Honda BR-V. The version that Malaysians receive is the facelifted model with a thoroughly revised exterior.
What’s Outside?
Wearing the Dynamic Shield face like the Triton, the Mitsubishi Xpander comes with LED headlamps and halogen DRLs (which also double up as fog lights). The car comes with 16-inch wheels wearing Toyo CP1 tyres. For a more premium look, it comes cladded with jewelries like crystal block headlamp, shark fin antenna, LED combination tail light and rear fog lamp.

What’s Inside?
With the 3rd row seats down, it has an acceptable 495-litre boot space, fold the 2nd row down, and it goes up to 836 litres, if you fill up the cargo space up to the roof though, it clocks in at a cavernous 1,600 litres. It’s also worth noting that the Xpander has best-in-class headroom and a flat floor when the seats are folded.
It should offer a more refined ride as well, because MMM claims thicker windows, headliner and floor carpets. This better insulated cabin also benefits from roof-mounted aircon vents for the second row. Other interior highlights include:
- 4.2-inch multi-information display
- Cruise control
- 9-inch touchscreen display with six speakers
- Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- Front-facing dashcam
- Surround View Monitor with Bird’s Eye View
- 2x USB ports
- 2x 12 V sockets
How Fast? There’s no fancy drivetrain to power this entry-level people mover along. Which is acceptable because its competitors offer more or less the same, except for the Honda BR-V which offers a more frugal Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT):
- Engine: 1.5-litre 4-cylinder naturally-aspirated
- Transmission: 4-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 105 hp
- Torque: 141 Nm
- Drivetrain: Front-wheel Drive
How Safe?
The Xpander is as well-equipped as its rivals when it comes to safety features, which is not saying a lot because all 3 come with only 2 airbags - even the Myvi at 30k cheaper comes with 6. Other active and passive safety features include:
- Hill-start assist
- Brake assist
- Active stability control
- Brake override system
- ISOFIX child seat anchors.
How Much?
Only available in one variant, the locally-assembled Mitsubishi Xpander goes for RM91,359 with the sales tax exemption. Come 2021, the price will revert to RM94,800. Due to overwhelming response, the production capacity has been filled up for December 2020. Which means new bookings will be subjected to SST.
