Tenaga Nasional Berhad and concessionaire PLUS Malaysia Berhad To Install More EV Charging stations
Tenaga Nasional Berhad is collaborating with concessionaire PLUS Malaysia Berhad on its energy transformation journey along the north-south expressway. The highways will be equipped with carbon emission reduction facilities as part of this strategic cooperation, in line with the government's objective to achieve net zero carbon emissions, or 'net-zero emissions,' by 2050.
Both parties have agreed to adopt three sustainability initiatives, including the creation of an electric vehicle charging station network, the installation of an energy efficiency monitoring system, and the installation of photovoltaic solar systems at select Rest and Relax locations.
TNB will establish an electric vehicle charging network at selected R&R stops with high traffic potential or car parks as part of the collaboration, while an energy efficiency monitoring system and a 360 kWP photovoltaic solar system will be erected on the Ayer Keroh R&R roof and the Tapah R&R roof (both on the Northern Direction).
“TNB will provide a reliable and stable electricity supply to the EV ecosystem including in offering solutions to PLUS to optimise energy costs and at the same time support green and sustainable energy initiatives, ”said the President and Chief TNB Executive Officer, Datuk Ir. Baharin Din.
Through its Sustainability Pathway project, the cooperation will aid TNB in achieving its net-zero carbon emission objective by 2050. Joint partnerships with other organisations such as PLUS will also help enhance investor confidence, particularly in its commitment to ESG. Datuk Ir. Baharin stated.
“This initiative strengthens Plus’ commitment to lead the industry as a highway operator that is sensitive to environmental sustainability. In addition to ensuring that good governance and commitment to the needs of society, environmental management is also one of the main pillars driving the development at the company and becoming the Smart Highway of the Future, ”said Datuk Azman Ismail of PLUS.
According to him, this is in keeping with the highway's other green goals, which include using green technology in its facilities, employing recycled pavement in R&R zones, and using ecologically friendly materials for highway operations.
The electric vehicle charging station's infrastructure network facility is expected to attract not only new users of electric vehicles, but also transport operators, particularly multinational companies, who want to switch from internal combustion to electric-based vehicles in order to reduce carbon emissions.
TNB has been actively collaborating to promote the use of electric vehicles in Malaysia since June 2021, and its strategic partners include DHL Express, Sime Darby Motors, BMW Group Malaysia, Malaysia Automotive, Robotics and IOT Institute (MARii), SOCAR Mobility Malaysia (Socar), and Ipoh City Council, in addition to PLUS.
