Accentuating Its Sporty E-Mobility Nature, The Volkswagen ID.4 And ID.5’s GTX Upgrade

Combining electromobility, sustainability and intelligent sportiness, Volkswagen’s GTX brand signifies the sporty top-of-the-line models of the ID. Family.
Embracing that further, the ID.4 GTX and ID.5 GTX models presented last year is now getting equipped with even more comprehensive standard equipment.
What’s more, Volkswagen also provided a glimpse of the look of other GTX models with new design accents in black and red.

Volkswagen’s sales and marketing head for the ID. Family, Silke Bagschik, said, “The success of the ID.4 GTX and ID.5 GTX confirms our strategy of positioning the GTX brand independently. Both models in their respective series have installation rates of almost 40 percent. We will continuously expand this brand and offer a GTX variant for every ID. model in future – from the ID.3 to the ID. Buzz.”
To begin with, the previously optional equipment packages known as Design and Comfort have become standard equipment.
They include a climate comfort windscreen, darkened side and rear windows, heated front seats, two USB-C ports and a variable centre console.

That’s not all, the packages also offer Air Care Climatronic air-conditioning system with active combination filter, stationary air-conditioning and two-zone temperature control.
Additionally, the interior’s upholstery also gets some new features. For example, the dash panel and door trim are now in black.
It gets red decorative seams throughout, visually emphasising its sportiness and can be found on the black leather steering wheel, among other places.

The optional premium sports seats are also decorated with red seams, piping and logo, as well as a felled seam all the way around.
Exterior-wise, black sets the accents. The roof frame strip, C-pillar, exterior mirrors and diffuser are finished in glossy black, along with glossy black 21-inch rims available on request.
In terms of the performance, courtesy of the 4MOTION dual-motor all-wheel drive system, the ID. GTX models are the ideal vehicles for everyday use.

Specifically, both of the new models now use two electric motors, sporting one on the front axle and one on the rear axle.
Said setup has a total power of 220 kW (295 hp), total torque of 460 Nm and works together as an electric drive. The vehicle’s top speed is electronically limited to 180 km/h.
Active on the rear axle is a permanently excited synchronous motor (PSM) with 150 kW (201 hp) of power and a torque of 310 Nm.

Whereas, installed on the front axle is an additional asynchronous motor (ASM) that generates 80 kW (108 hp) and 162 Nm.
This is particularly compact and light, can be overloaded on a temporary basis and only produces minimal drag losses when it runs without being supplied with current.
Aside from that, the maximum trailer weight of both GTX models is 1,400 kg, which is 200 kg more than the rear-wheel drive models.

Furthermore, the ID.4 GTX and ID.5 GTX’s intelligent control of the dual-motor drive is handled by the vehicle dynamics manager.
Developed in-house by Volkswagen, this software offers the optimum combination of efficiency, dynamics and driving stability.
With it, the e-motor on the rear axle can power the vehicle all by itself. While for a sportier drive or simply more traction, the asynchronous machine on the front axle is activated.

Not only the powertrain, but also all braking, steering and chassis control systems are controlled by the vehicle dynamics manager, depending on the selected driving profile.
Outstandingly, all of these workings take place in just a few fractions of a second and so smoothly that it is unnoticeable for the driver.
Range-wise, the ID.4 GTX offers 500 km (WLTP) and the ID.5 GTX up to 512 km (WLTP). The maximum charging capacity of both models is 135 kW.

Their 77-kWh high-voltage battery can be charged from 5 percent to 80 percent in 36 minutes and offers a range of 337 km for the ID.4 GTX (WLTP) and 376 km for the ID.5 GTX (WLTP).
Then, the intelligent Electric Vehicle Route Planner supports better long journeys as the navigation system provides the most time efficient multi-stop route planning.
Automatically, this is continuously adjusted while the vehicle is in motion, for instance, there is no need for a short charging stop if the driver drives very efficiently.

Other than that, the next generation of the ID. software the Plug & Charge function will also be available for the new GTX models, making charging on the go even more convenient.
When the charging cable is plugged into a compatible DC rapid-charging point, the vehicle automatically verifies itself and launches secure encrypted communication with the station.
Currently, the Plug & Charge is already supported in many large charging infrastructures such as Ionity, Aral, BP, Enel, EON, as well as Iberdrola and Eviny. Further large providers will follow.

Pricing-wise, the ID.4 GTX and ID.5 GTX are already available for order. They start from EUR 53,255 (RM 246,361) and EUR 56,455 (RM 261,164) respectively.
That said, the sporty GTX brand has been part of the company’s portfolio for over a year, and moving forward Volkswagen will be offering every ID. series with its very own GTX model.
