Whilst still on a high after launching the second-gen Perodua Alza MPV earlier this month, national carmaker Perodua appears to be busy with yet another high-value effort.
In fact, the firm plans to introduce a new and hybrid petrol-electric variant of its Ativa compact crossover SUV very soon. A handful of said models were spotted being transported recently, with spyshots of which going viral on social media.

Though the firm hasn’t officially revealed much, CariCarz.com has learnt of Perodua’s plans with the model. Here are six facts you ought to know about the incoming electrified Ativa hybrid variant.
#1 It’s not for sale… yet
Unfortunately, this variant of the Ativa will initially be available exclusively through a special leasing program organised by the national carmaker. This will serve as a test bed for Perodua to assess real-world useability and acceptance of hybrid vehicles as such in the hands of Malaysian motorists. Speaking of which, the next fact might be disappointing to some keen prospects…
#2 There will only be 300 units
Credible sources report that, for this program, Perodua will deploy just 300 units of the Ativa hybrid. As to who will get to sign up for this, it’s by invitation only and Perodua will only hand-pick customers located in the Klang Valley, as well as Penang and Johor. Additionally, they will also prioritise invites for those who are currently waiting to take delivery of existing Ativa variants too.
#3 It’s a 5-year (100,000KM) lease term
Credible sources also report Perodua will lease the Ativa Hybrid through a 5-year agreement with a mileage cap of 100,000KM. Upon reaching either end stages, the car must then be returned to Perodua. Presently, it remains unclear if Perodua will offer the option to purchase the car outright beyond the initial lease agreement’s tenure. Perodua is expected to reveal more details regarding this soon.
#4 It will cost invitees RM32,150 to ‘own’
Sources are also reporting that the lease agreement will cost invitees an initial one-time upfront payment of RM2,150, followed by a RM500 monthly fee lasting through the lease agreement’s 5-year span. The payments are supposedly all inclusive, covering the annual road tax, insurance, and servicing costs. Apart from which, owners only need to bear the costs for wear and tear, as well as fuel.
#5 It involves a little ‘homework’
Those lucky enough to lease the Ativa hybrid will need to agree and consent towards having a GPS telematics system fitted in the car. Perodua will use this to study driving and usage patterns, which includes tracking speed, location, run-time, downtime as well as acceleration and braking characteristics. Additionally, owners will also need to submit regular reports to Perodua.
(Japan-spec Daihatsu Rocky e-Smart Hybrid)
#6 It promises to be very fuel-efficient
The Ativa hybrid Perodua will initially offer through this lease will reportedly mirror the specifications of the Daihatsu Rocky e-Smart Hybrid sold in Japan. It will employ an e-Smart hybrid system that pairs a 1.2-litre 3-cyl petrol engine and an electric motor. The former is tasked as a generator for the latter, which outputs 106 HP and 170 NM to the front wheels.
As a full series hybrid, the powertrain sees the Daihatsu Rocky hybrid able to boast a class-leading fuel consumption rate of 28 KM/litre (3.57 litres/100 KM) based on WLTC (World harmonised Light vehicle Test Cycles) standards.
In contrast, the non-hybrid Rocky model, which employs a similar 1.0-litre turbo 3-cyl heart as the regular non-hybrid Ativa, has a claimed WLTC consumption rating of 18.6 KM/Litre (5.37 litres/100 KM).

And there you have it, six core facts about the upcoming Perodua Ativa hybrid variant. Expect to see a number of these out and about on the roads of the Klang Valley, as well as in Penang and Johor, later this year when its deliveries commence in the fourth quarter (Q4).
