If you are caught in a flood, the first thing you should do is act quickly and get out of the water.  Don't freak out, and here's what you should do if your car floods.

1. Turn off the vehicle's engine.

If the water level increases to the point where your car can no longer pass through, turn off the engine as soon as possible to minimise damage.

Attempting to start an automobile engine amid a flood is a no-no. According to The Star, Malaysian Automotive Association president Datuk Aishah Ahmad stated that car owners should never attempt to start their vehicles during or after flash floods.

If your car got flooded while parked or broke down halfway, leave the engine running.

2. Park the vehicle

Your main concern is to get yourself and those around you to safety. To avoid getting swept away by the current, leave your car and seek higher ground or a secure zone. You can only return to your car once the flood has subsided.

It is finally time to save your car once the storm and flood have passed. So, what should you do if your car is flooded?

1. Do not start the engine.

First and foremost, you should never start the engine right away because it could severely harm your engine control unit (ECU). Automobile owners could save a lot of money if they don't start the engine of a flooded car.

2. Allow the car to dry.

Because your car has been buried in water for some time, you should dry it before proceeding to the following stage. Molds will grow if you do not dry it soon, which would be another nightmare for you. Allow your automobile to dry by opening the doors and windows.

You can also take your vehicle to the shop and have the mechanics drain the engine and transmission.

Cleaning and drying out a submerged car would cost between RM2,000 and RM5,000.

3. Look over the damage.

Begin by inspecting the oil dipstick and air filter of the vehicle. You must not start the car engine I f either of these has even a few drops of water on them. Instead, you'll need to take it to a mechanic to have the water drained and the fluids changed.

Don't forget to examine other parts that are commonly damaged and contaminated by water.

Here’s a checklist of things you need to check:

Fuel system:

Brake

Clutch

Power steering

Coolant reservoirs

Electric system:

Headlights

Turn signals

Air conditioning

Stereo

Power locks

Windows and seats

Interior lights

4. Clear the debris

Remove any debris that has become lodged around your car's wheels, brakes, or underbody.

5. Send it to a mechanic for a thorough examination.

Unless you are familiar with the technical components of automobiles, it is better to seek the assistance of a professional to properly inspect your vehicle. An experienced mechanic will solve your car problem while also providing extensive explanations and recommendations.
