Stellantis Gurun Plant To Generate 34% Annual Energy Via Solar Source In 21 Years
Stellantis, a leading automakers and mobility provider for brands such as Alfa Romeo, Citroën, DS, Fiat, Jeep, Lancia, Maserati, Opel, Peugeot and more has inked a partnership with Leader Energy Group for installation, operation, maintenance and financing of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems in its Gurun Plant, Kedah.
Leader Energy Group (LEG) is a Malaysian-based power company with over 20 years of operations in the power sector across Asia Pacific. By choosing to move towards solar energy, Stellantis is eyeing to hit its net zero emissions goal by 2038, this is a part of its Dare Forward 2030 strategy.
The LEG’s PV system planned for the Gurun plant will generate a maximum output of 2,189.81 Kilowatt peak (kWp) electricity, which in over 21 years, would generate 54.811 Gigawatt hours (GWh) of energy, accounting for an estimated 34% of the plant’s annual energy requirement. This will indirectly also reduce carbon dioxide produced by approximately 1963.4 tons of carbon dioxide annually, equivalent to 50,340 trees planted in a year.
The PV adoption project was managed by Leader Solar Sdn. Bhd. (LSSB), a subsidiary of Leader Energy, which focuses on renewable energy solutions to Commercial & Industrial sectors in this region.
The entire project was completed on 31 October 2022, just four months from start.
Izwan Rasul, Country Manager of LSSB, added that “Leader Energy is committed to drive Malaysia’s agenda of achieving 31% renewable energy mix by 2025, and 40% by 2035. This new rooftop solar PV project at Stellantis’ Gurun plant will bring us one step closer to that goal,” he added.
Stellantis has full ownership of the Gurun plant which it uses for the production and supply of key Peugeot models namely the 2008, 3008 and 5008 models to the ASEAN region including Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand and Cambodia.
