Total Number Of Registered Vehicles In Malaysia Now At 36.3 Million Units - Loke
According to Transport Minister Anthony Loke, the number of registered vehicles in Malaysia has surpassed the population of the nation, with a total of over 36.3 million vehicles as of October this year.
With 32.4 million people living in Malaysia as of last year, the data shows a marked increase in the number of automobiles on the country's roads. Cars lead the list of registered vehicles (17,244,978), closely followed by motorcycles (16,773,112) and goods transportation vehicles (1,429,403), according to NST.
The variety includes 64,021 buses, 30,318 rental cars, 84,745 taxis, and 736,410 other non-categorized vehicles.
Of the total, 23,822,322 of them still have active motor vehicle licenses or road taxes, while 12,540,664 are inactive and have no road tax.
This situation indicates a potential problem with tax compliance or vehicle registration. To address this situation, a comprehensive approach to enforcing tax compliance and ensuring that all vehicles on the road contribute their fair share to road infrastructure and maintenance is required, according to Loke.
The minister also addressed the transportation situation, outlining the government's initiatives to promote the use of public transportation. This includes programs like Prasarana's My50 unlimited monthly pass and free KTM Komuter travel passes for people with disabilities and students.
"The Transport Ministry is carrying out several initiatives to encourage the use of public transportation such as the My50 unlimited monthly pass through Prasarana and free travel pass for people with disabilities and school students for KTM Komuter.
"In a few years, the rail network in the Klang Valley will be further widened," he said in a parliamentary reply to a question from Senator Datuk Koh Nai Kwong.
Loke stated that the Putrajaya Mass Rapid Transit Line, or MRT2, began operations on March 16, while the government was reviewing the proposed MRT3 project, which covers a 51-kilometre rail network on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur and Ampang Jaya.
He stated that the proposed rail alignment, which would include the construction of ten interchange stations, would be linked to existing rail services such as MRT1, MRT2, LRT, Monorail, and KTM Komuter. On the topic of micromobility, the minister stated that his ministry was also working on a strategic partnership with local governments and other stakeholders to facilitate the use of micromobility vehicles.
