Boosting Charging Infrastructure Key To Encourage Electric Vehicle Use
According to an industry player, the rapid growth of the electric vehicle (EV) sector should result in equal progress in technology and infrastructure supporting environmentally friendly vehicles.
According to a Bermaz Auto Bhd spokesman who spoke on the condition of anonymity, the growing adoption of EVs by Malaysians will result in further development of technological infrastructure to attract new owners and provide assurance to current EV users.
Previously, The Star reported on growing concerns about EV infrastructure, with experts and stakeholders arguing that the number of charging stations should be increased to keep up with rising EV ownership.
Experts and stakeholders have also urged the government to provide more incentives to help the segment grow.
According to the spokesman, charging times could be reduced as new technologies are introduced, giving EV users more confidence when driving long distances. Changes in battery technology, according to the spokesman, will also have an impact on EV adoption.
Further explaining, the spokesperson stated that concerns such as range anxiety would be less of an issue once they realised such vehicles did not need to be charged daily.
"Training (on handling EVs) are also extended by the company towards first responders in case of emergency, as well as relevant stakeholders who would like to keep abreast with EV developments," the spokesperson said.
Datuk Zakaria Ahmad Zabidi, chief operating officer of PLUS Malaysia Berhad (PLUS), stated that 20 direct current (DC) chargers have been commissioned and activated on its highways to date.
He added that two more were under construction. Source: TheStar
