Heads up motorists, you might want to re-plan your trips to Penang this weekend with the news we’re about to break. According to Bernama, both Penang Bridges will be closed temporarily this Sunday – Jan 8, 2023.
The closure of both bridges, as well several other roads connected to it on the island, stems from the Penang Fellowship Ride cycling event that’s taking place on said date. This was confirmed by Penang State Youth and Sports Committee chairman Soon Lip Chee.
Soon said that since the cycling event will involve both the Penang Bridge and the Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah Bridge, the one-way road will be closed at certain times only to make way for cycling participants.

“For the Penang Bridge, which is from the island to Seberang Perai, the closing time is from 6.30 AM to 9 AM,” clarified Soon when he spoke with Bernama. He also adds that for the Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah Bridge from Batu Kawan to Batu Maung, this stretch will be closed from 9 AM until 12 PM.
The Penang Fellowship Ride cycling event route is set cover up to 66 KM. Soon further added that participants are reminded to wear the official jersey provided by organisers G Club Penang Cyclists and the Penang Sports Council.
Up to 2,500 participants have reportedly registered for this event, including those hailing from overseas as far as Australia, Japan and Singapore. Furthermore, the event will also see participation by the state’s Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak.
