EURO NCAP 2022 Top Performers - 5 Winners, 6 Category
Euro NCAP recently announced the winners from the 2022 safest cars award based on tests carried out throughout the year. Criterias taken into account were Adult Occupant Protection, Child Occupant Protection, Vulnerable User Protection and Safety Assist technologies.
2022 saw some pretty strong contenders especially from the lesser popular global brands from China of which one is already available in Malaysia.

Winners were broken up into five class categories covering all segment and classes in the market. Listed below are the category and the winners;
Large Family Car - Hyundai IONIQ 6
Small Family Car - ORA Good Cat
Executive Car & Pure Electric - Tesla Model S
Small Off-Roader - Tesla Model Y
Large Off-Roader - WEY Coffee 01

The Hyundai IONIQ 6, which would be available in Malaysia circa second half of this year aced the Euro NCAP Adult Occupant Protection segment with 97%. This EV features loads of latest safety technologies and is up-to-date in terms of the recent top safety criterias required of the automotive companies. In the segment of child safety, the IONIQ 6 was recorded providing the 6 and 10 year old dummies good protection on critical regions during a simulated frontal offset and side barrier crash tests hence scoring top points.

Now on the ORA Good Cat, this car by the Chinese automotive giant Great Wall Motor (GWM) did very well in its category, offering 92% score for adult occupant protection and 83% for child safety. The ORA Good Cat fared extremely well squashing other larger automotive contenders in its segment.

Tesla, the world leading EV brand, bagged two awards with its Model S and Model Y. The Model S was named the best executive car and best pure electric car with 94% adult occupant safety and 91% for child safety while the Model Y scored the best small off-roader award. The Model Y scored 97% in adult safety which is significantly higher than the premium Model S but just 87% when it came to child safety.

The Large Off-Road category winner was another Chinese marque, the WEY Coffee 01. Most would not have heard of this brand but its good to point out that WEY just like ORA is owned by GWM too. The WEY Coffee 01 managed to score 91% for adult occupant safety and 87% for child safety.
With the 2022 Euro NCAP bar set high, its is going to be an interesting 2023 with many more new models set to be launched by not only well known automakers but also lesser known future power houses especially from China.
