Watch: Family Of 4 Spotted Tilting And Shaking A SG-Registered Car While Refueling In JB
A Singaporean family of four was recently spotted shaking their car while refueling at a petrol station in Johor Bahru, Johor, to get as much fuel as possible.
A woman can be seen pumping gas in a two-minute video while three of her, presumably, family members, including an elderly woman, vigorously push their vehicle up and down.
They were spotted at a Petron station in Taman Pelangi, Johor Bahru, and the family lives in Singapore, according to China Press, because the car had a Singaporean licence plate.
To be clear, shaking and tilting your car to maximise your gas tank can be extremely dangerous to you, your car, and everyone around you.
These people believe that they can stuff more petrol in their car's fuel tank if they shake the car hard enough.
Malaysians laughed and joked about the car shaking in the comment section, with some even calling the action "cardiopulmonary resuscitation" (CPR).
The comments read;
"Haha. Emergency procedure (to save) a car. CPR in progress," commented one Facebook user.
"Pump petrol until this extent. It's so embarrassing," scoffed another.
"Shake ya, shake! Shake until we arrive at grandma's place."
Is it true that tilting and shaking your car allows you to pump more gas?
Yes, it appears to, but not without great risk to you, your car, and everyone around you.
According to Singaporean newspaper The New Paper, tilting your car sideways may allow you to fill up an extra litre of gas.
However, automotive experts pointed out that fuel tanks are not meant to be completely filled, as the extra space is intended to act as a safety feature when the fuel expands.
If the tank is completely full, flammable vapour may escape, posing a fire hazard and releasing harmful vapour into the atmosphere. If the tank's cap is not properly secured, excess gasoline will also leak out when the car is level.
Plus, excessive shaking of a car may cause damage to the vehicle's rear suspension and rupture of some of its components.
