Waze Tests New Alerts Warning Drivers About Roads With Past Crashes
According to Israeli tech news site Geektime, a new beta version of Waze can alert users about roads with statistically high crash occurrences based on its community data.
When using this new beta version of Waze, nearby high-risk roads are highlighted in red on the map. However, Geektime warns that it may not do so for roads that the user frequently travels on.
The feature also only displays one pop-up notification about the dangerous roads around the driver, possibly to keep caution from becoming anxiety.
If you're in the country and have access to the beta release, you'll see a pop-up that says, "You may see alerts for 'History of crashes' on some roads using reports from drivers and your route." While the feature is still in beta, it is expected to be made available to the general public soon.
If you don't want Waze to paint the roads red when it comes out, you can disable the feature with a toggle in the app's settings section designated for alerts.
It's one of the first new features to emerge from Waze since the company was rolled into the Google Maps team. Google announced the merger earlier this month, and now that Waze is part of Google Geo, "the teams will benefit from further increased technical collaboration," according to Waze's head of PR Caroline Bourdeau.
Waze CEO Neha Parikh also left the company, all while Google looks to cut costs across the board. Ideally, now that Waze is more closely collaborating with Maps, more collaborative user data could be crunched and turned into new features in the future.
