The Switch To Digital Road Tax And Driving Licence Will Save JPJ RM96MIL A Year In Printing Costs – Loke
Lesen kenderaan motor (LKM) and a physical driving licence (LMM) will no longer be used, which is expected to save the government a significant amount each year on printing expenses. According to Anthony Loke, minister of transportation, the road transport department (JPJ) will save RM96MIL annually by switching to digital licences.
He declared that JPJ would use the savings to advance the digitalization effort. He explained, "This will be used to upgrade the system." Having to visit a JPJ outlet or post office to renew their driver's licence and road tax will no longer be necessary, he continued, saving time for drivers. Additionally, it will significantly reduce crowds at JPJ offices.
Given that more than a million road tax renewals are completed every month nationwide, according to Loke, the change was not insignificant. For instance, there were 1.1MIL renewals in February 2022 alone, and 1.6 million renewals of the road tax occurred in March. Around 1.5 million renewals occur on average each month, he claimed.
“With digitalisation, we can reduce the traffic in JPJ offices by around 80%, because out of the total, 80% of renewals are for private vehicles. For the public, the savings will be with time,” he added.
Since February 10, you are no longer required to display the road tax sticker on your car (for certain classes). Your JPJ-issued documents are now registered in the system, but you can still get a LKM sticker. Although it is not required, one can download the MyJPJ mobile app and store the road tax and licence there.
