Nissan plans to build second US battery plant - Ashwani Gupta

Nissan Motor Co Ltd raised its electrified car sales targets on Monday and announced plans to increase power train production in the United States as it seeks to catch up in a segment dominated by newer automakers such as Tesla Inc. With its all-battery-powered Leaf, the Japanese automaker was a pioneer in electric vehicles (EVs), but it has struggled alongside many legacy automakers in the face of increasing competition from nimbler new entrants.

Nissan now aims to have electrified vehicles which include its advanced hybrid e-power cars make up over 55% of global sales by fiscal 2030, from a previous goal of 50%, it said. According to a statement, the automaker plans 27 new electrified vehicles by that year, 19 of which will be all-battery EVs. In comparison, its previous plan called for 23 electrified vehicles, including 15 all-battery EVs.

Nissan plans to build electric power trains at its Decherd plant in Tennessee, in addition to EV production at its Smyrna plant, to help it meet requirements for the Inflation Reduction Act, said chief operating officer Ashwani Gupta on Monday. Nissan is confident that it will be in compliance with the Act as of calendar year 2026, according to Gupta in an online briefing.
