Chery Invited To Discuss Investment And Development Strategies with PM Anwar
On March 29, 2023, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim made his first visit to China to discuss economic and trade relations between Malaysia and China. During his visit, Chery International executives were also invited to have an in-depth discussion with the PM's envoy.
Representatives of Chery International met with Malaysia's Minister of International Trade and Industry (MITI), Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz, to discuss the country's investment strategy and development goals.
Malaysia values Chery's international corporate strength and has expressed strong interest in this investment plan. The Anhui-based automaker was also invited to participate in a round table discussion with PM Anwar and the Malaysia-China Business Forum on April 1. Chery intends to return to Malaysia after a five-year absence. According to reports, Chery has established a wholly-owned subsidiary in Malaysia, which will be unveiled in the second quarter of this year. According to reports, the Chinese automaker was in the final stages of talks with Inokom to begin local assembly (CKD) of its models, which include the Chery Omoda 5 and the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro.
For the record, Malaysia has received a record RM170 billion in Chinese investment commitments. The sum, the largest so far from China, is the result of 19 memorandums of understanding (MOU) signed between Chinese and Malaysian businesses. According to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, this demonstrates investor confidence in Malaysia. The prime minister is currently on the last of his three-day visit in China to strengthen strategic bilateral political and economic ties.
Earlier, in his keynote address at the forum, Anwar urged Chinese investors and business leaders to take advantage of the country's strong bilateral ties and seize the numerous investment opportunities presented by the current government.
For the 14th consecutive year, China has been Malaysia's largest trading partner, with total trade of US$110.6 billion (RM488 billion) in 2022.
