MG Cyberster EV Convertible Debuts As Tesla Roadster Fighter

The Auto Shanghai 2023 showcases a slew of EV models, from the luxurious ones to even futuristic concepts and prototypes that gives us the glimpse into the future of electromobility. Added to the list of EVs debuted at this auto show is the all-new MG Cyberster – an EV convertible model hailed from the UK.

This new EV roadster is built by MG Motor – a British marque that is known for their open two-seater sports car and coupes. Their latest entrant will mark the marque’s venture into electromobility, poised to go against the likes of the yet-to-be-launched Tesla Roadster in the compact EV sports car segment.

Although no specifications were unveiled during its Auto Shanghai debut, MG promises the Cyberster will be a “high-performance EV sports car,” aside from being the first new convertible model by MG in years.

Visually, the Cyberster stands as a compact EV roadster with design cues inspired from older MG roadsters found throughout the brand’s history. Like any other sporty roadster, the car comes with a somewhat elongated front hood, smooth body lines, and Kammback-style rear end.

On the side, the Cyberster sports unique scissor doors that grant it with wider and bigger door aperture, allowing folks to jump in-and-out of this small EV with no hassle.

As we mentioned earlier, MG has yet to unveil any details of the car’s performance setup. Word around the campfire suggesting that the MG might come with both single and dual motor setups, with the former being the base option. Said motor layouts are said to be spread across three variants, with the range-topping one getting the more powerful dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD) drivetrain.

As we all know, roadsters are famously known for their lightweight and sheer driving pleasure, which doesn’t resemble any modern EVs nowadays due to the heavy battery pack they harness. MG, on the other hand, claims that the Roadster will only weigh anywhere between 1,850 KG to 1,985 KG, depending on the motor and battery spec.

Honestly, the estimated weight sounds pretty heavy for a proper ICE roadster, but for EV standards, those ballpark figures are considered pretty good and lightweight.

Following its debut on the China soil, the MG Cyberster EV roadster will go on sale in both the UK and the rest of the European markets by 2024, alongside a slew of EV SUVs and sedans from the brand. Though no exact prices were revealed, demands for the Cyberster have really gone up, receiving up to 5,000 ROIs (registration of interest) from customers in the Chinese market alone.
