As part of the approval to allow Tesla to set up business in Malaysia, the US-based electric vehicle manufacturer is also required to install a certain number of fast DC chargers, which will help to expand the country's current EV ecosystem. According to Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Aziz, Minister of International Trade and Industry, Malaysia's requirements for Tesla include the installation of at least 50 Superchargers within three years. Because Miti approved Tesla's application in March, they must meet their EV charging station commitments by 2026. Furthermore, at least 30% of these Superchargers must be accessible to other EV brands.
The majority of new Tesla Supercharger locations use V3 Superchargers, which have a maximum rate of 250kW. Most locations have at least three Superchargers, and some, like Bangkok's Central World, have nine. For the record, Tesla Malaysia's application was approved under the Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) Global Leaders programme, which runs from January 1, 2023 to December 31, 2025.
