The construction of a new automotive battery manufacturing plant in northwestern Turkey began Monday, with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in attendance. SIRO, a joint venture between China's Farasis Energy and Turkey's Togg, held a groundbreaking ceremony for the new SIRO Battery Development and Production Campus in Gemlik, Bursa's northwestern province. The new facility will open in 2026 and will be an integrated centre for the production of Lithium-ion Nickel Manganese Cobalt batteries, modules, and packs. "We are taking a step towards making Türkiye a powerful player in battery technologies," Erdogan stated in his opening remarks. "Türkiye will become one of the few countries capable of developing and manufacturing battery cells."

He claimed that this investment would boost GDP by 33 billion dollars in ten years and create 7,000 jobs. "We demonstrated our support by offering 30 billion liras (1.55 billion USD) in fixed investment," he continued, "and we will continue to support anyone who contributes to the Turkish economy, whether foreign or domestic." The SIRO facility will be right next to the Togg Technology Campus, where it has already begun producing batteries for Turkey's first electric vehicles. Togg, which was founded in 2018 and is supported by the government, is regarded by Erdogan as a prestige project that will reduce Turkey's reliance on foreign automakers.
