MARii CEO, Azrul Reza Aziz.
Malaysia Automotive, Robotics, and IoT Institute (MARii), an agency under the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) aims to develop a competitive and sustainable EV industry in Malaysia, with a strong emphasis on green technology development. MARii shared insights on the Electric Vehicle (EV) Development Plan in Malaysia at the 1st ASEAN Battery and EV Technology Conference 2023 (ABEVTC) held in Bali, Indonesia from May, 9 to May, 11 2023.

The conference, which is attended by EV industry experts and professionals, is co-organized by Singapore Battery Consortium (SBC), Indonesia's National Centre for Sustainable Transportation Technology (NCSTT), Thailand Energy Storage Technology Association (TESTA), and Hioki E.E Corporation. This conference marks a significant milestone in the region's drive towards sustainable transportation, with the goal of creating vibrant ecosystems and strengthening partnerships among key players in the battery and EV sectors.

Azrul Reza Aziz, CEO of MARii, spoke at the conference about Malaysia's EV Development Plan, which is aligned with the National Automotive Policy (NAP) 2020. The NAP 2020 is a policy document that outlines the Malaysian government's strategy for encouraging the growth of Malaysia's EV industry and creating a competitive and sustainable automotive industry. He also emphasised the 12th Malaysia Plan's commitment in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC) to reduce carbon emissions by 45% by 2030 and to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

The government is currently committed to leading efforts to attract EV investments and meeting the national target of 15% TIV for EV and hybrid by 2030 and 38% TIV by 2040. The goal for charging infrastructure is to have 10,000 public EV charging stations in place by 2025. “We are committed to achieve these national targets and are working closely with industry players, academia, and government agencies to create a conducive environment for the growth of the EV industry in Malaysia,” said Azrul Reza Aziz.

“Our participation in the 1st ASEAN Battery and EV Technology Conference emphasizes our commitment in advancing the EV industry in Malaysia and the region,” he added.
