Miros Will Re-Test Perodua Axia Safety Despite No Complaints From Buyers

Following reports of rigged safety test reports in Japan, the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (Miros) announced that it will conduct an assessment on the latest Perodua Axia model, despite the fact that car owners in Malaysia have not raised any safety concerns. Professor Dr. Wong Shaw Voon, Chairman of Miros, stated that the assessments would be carried out on the latest Perodua Axia model produced by Perodua to ensure the safety of the cars after Daihatsu Motor Co. Ltd. (Daihatsu) tampered with the safety tests in Japan.

Perodua would not conduct a recall or suspend deliveries of the Axia model.

"We have not received any complaints so far, but we will look into Perodua's claims," Wong told the local news portal Free Malaysia Today (FMT). This comes after Perodua president and CEO Datuk Zainal Abidin Ahmad assured the public on 30 April that the new Perodua Axia models were safe to drive.

For the record, the Perodua Axia is the result of a joint venture between Perodua and Japanese automaker Daihatsu, which recently revealed that approximately 88,000 cars had undergone rigged side collision safety tests. The majority of the 88,000 affected Toyota vehicles, namely Toyota Yaris models, were destined for Thailand, Mexico, and Gulf Cooperation Council countries.

Daihatsu claimed that it discovered the rigged safety tests after receiving a whistleblower report, and the Japanese automaker then reported the issue to regulatory agencies.

Shipment of the affected models has been halted and will resume only after new safety tests in the presence of regulators confirm the models' safety. Zainal however, stated that Perodua would not conduct a recall or suspend deliveries of the Axia model to their customers. Source: FMT
