Chery Omoda 5 & Tiggo 8 Pro SUVs Set to Debut on July 6
After several previews and announcements in the past few months, Chery Malaysia is finally ready to debut two new models into our local market. Marking the Chinese marque’s return to the local automotive foray is the much-anticipated Chery Omoda 5 and Tiggo 8 Pro SUVs, which are slated to make their market entry later on July 6th, according to Chery Malaysia’s official Facebook page.

2023 Chery Omoda 5 SUV
Starting off with the smaller and sportier of the two, the Chery Omoda 5 is a B-segment SUV that has its crosshair set on to the likes of Honda HR-V, Toyota Corolla Cross, as well as Proton X50. Unlike the preview unit we saw last year, the Malaysian-bound Omoda 5 is locally-assembled (CKD) at Inokom’s Kulim plant, as the marque announced partnership with said local assembly firm earlier this year.

Beneath its sporty and funky drape lies a peppy 1.5-litre 4-cyl turbocharged mill that delivers 154 HP and 230 NM of power to the Omoda 5’s front wheels (FWD) via a CVT gearbox. Built and developed in-house by Chery, this powertrain comes standard with a 10-year/1 million KM warranty provided by Chery Malaysia, should you have concerns pertaining to its reliability.

Things are also not too shabby once we get inside the Omoda 5, as it comes standard with modern cabin equipment. Highlights include the sizable infotainment display with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support, wireless charging pad, 8-speaker Sony sound system, and many more.

2023 Chery Tiggo 8 Pro SUV
Next in line is the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro three-row SUV. Unlike the variant previewed last year, the Malaysian-bound Tiggo 8 Pro will be the upgraded version, which is known as the Tiggo 8 Pro Max in China. To avoid confusion with the well-known phone brand, this D-segment SUV will be known just as the Tiggo 8 Pro in our local market.

Being a sizable SUV with plenty of cabin and cargo space, the Tiggo 8 Pro sports the more conventional boxy SUV shape, with several accents and trims to make them look more stylish. This ‘Max’ version adds a new ‘galaxy’ front grille to the SUV, while the tailgate now comes with a full-width LED taillights bar. Apart from that, the Tiggo 8 Pro also rides on stylish 19-inch wheels.

Hiding behind its stylish front grille is a 2.0-litre 4-cyl turbocharged T-GDI engine that outputs 250 HP and 390 NM. Power is then sent to its front wheels (FWD) via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT). Aside from that, the Tiggo 8 Pro also comes with three selectable driving modes – Eco, Normal, and Sport.

Beyond its conventional exterior, the Tiggo 8 Pro truly shines from the inside. The leather-draped cabin is equipped with modern and luxury equipment like open-pore wooden trims, massive infotainment screen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support, multi-zone air conditioning, electronic panoramic roof, wireless charging pad, as well as the same 8-speaker Sony sound system as the Omoda 5.

Both the Chery Omoda 5 and Tiggo 8 Pro will make their official debut later in July 6 this year, marking the official return of the Chery brand in Malaysia. As for pricing, we expect the smaller Omoda 5 to be somewhere around the RM130,000 mark, while the flagship Tiggo 8 Pro commands a higher price tag between RM160,000 to RM180,000.
