DNGA-based Toyota Yaris Cross Launches In Indonesia With 6 Variants

The Toyota Yaris Cross has officially launched itself in the Indonesian market this week just a month after making its ASEAN debut in said republic. Six variants in total are on offer to consumers in Indonesia where it’s priced between IDR351 million (approx. RM109,000) and IDR449.95 Million (approx. RM140,000).
The range consist of two main powertrain flavours starting with a familiar 1.5-litre 4-cyl Dual VVT-i petrol unit producing 106 PS and 138 NM. Next to which is a 1.5-litre 4-cyl petrol-electric hybrid package that sees 91 PS and 121 NM served up by its combustion side, and 80 PS and 141 NM through its electric side.
It should be noted the hybrid variant’s fuel tank capacity is 36 litres, which is less than the pure internal combustion options that pack 42 litres. Its electrified side also includes an electric traction motor plus a lithium-ion type battery.

Both also share similar CVT automatic transmission options, but only the base petrol-powered 1.5G variant is available with a 5-speed manual transmission option – something widely preferred by budget-conscious buyers in said republic just across the Malacca Straits.
Based on the Daihatsu New Global Architecture (DNGA) platform, the Yaris Cross is closely related to things like the Perodua Ativa-Daihatsu Rocky-Toyota Raize trio that’s slotted just below it, not forgetting the fourth-gen (AC100) Vios-Yaris Ativ compact sedan, the Perodua Alza-Toyota Veloz MPV twins, and the Perodua Axia-Toyota Agya-Daihatsu Ayla trio of superminis.
In terms of size, the Yaris Cross is similar with the Honda HR-V, but has 210 MM greater
ground clearance.
The Indonesian-spec model launched this week is produced locally by Toyota in said republic where it boasts a whopping 80% of local content in its production. Crucially, while the model is manufactured in ASEAN, Toyota is exporting the model not just in the region, but to Latin America too.
In terms of size, the Yaris Cross sits measures 4,310 MM long with a 2,620 MM wheelbase, 1,770 MM wide, 1,615 MM tall, thus seeing it sitting right in the ballpark of the rivalling Honda HR-V. Unlike the latter H-badged rival though, the Yaris Cross has 210 MM more in terms of ground clearance.
LED headlights are standard kit, nd they feature a striking LED DRL combination design too.
Another neat feature present is the powered tailgate with foot sensor-activation.
Standard equipped across the range are LED headlamps with DRL and LED taillights. Higher S variants, on the other hand, are distinguished by its adoption of 18-inch alloy wheels instead of 17-inch ones seen in the G variants, automatic headlamp activation, as well as a powered tailgate with a kick sensor feature.
There’s also two sporty GR Sport flavours available, each based on the respective petrol and petrol-electric range-topper. These sporty flagship gets panoramic glass roofs and sunshades as standard kit too.
Other key features present on board include a 10.1-inch infotainment display that boasts “wireless smartphone connectivity”, a 7-inch digital TFT multi-info instrument display, wireless charger, automatic climate control, and a multicolour ambient lighting feature for the console box and front door trim.
As for safety, the bill for the Yaris Cross in Indonesia includes an electronic parking brake (EPB) with auto hold function, 6 airbags lining the cabin, the combination of ABS and VSC driver aids, as well as both rear cross-traffic alert (RCTA) and blind-spot monitor (BSM), all lined as standard across the board.
Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) active driver assists (ADAS) suite is also primed in this latest
DNGA-based offering.
Higher-specced S variants, on the other hand, get bolstered with the Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) suite of active driver assists (ADAS) added. This includes Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), forward collision warning (FCW) and autonomous emergency braking (AEB), as well as lane-departure warning, -prevention, and -keeping control (LDW, LDP, and LKC).
Overall, it’s plain to see how the new DNGA-based Yaris Cross stands as a rather tasty offering in Indonesia right now. More importantly, it gives us a glimpse of how the rumoured new Perodua D66B SUV might turn out.
Word from the grapevine is that the second national carmaker is in the midst of developing the Ativa’s bigger brother of sorts with a targeted launch window sometime within the next two years.
Are you folks digging this ASEAN-made and DNGA-based Yaris Cross offering? Would you be tempted if it were treated with the Perodua badge and typically affordable pricing scheme? As always, hit the comments below – and our social platforms – with your thoughts…
