Govt. Mulling Installation Of Additional AWAS Cameras To Curb Traffic Violation

If you are unaware, our country's Automated Enforcement System (AES) has already been rebranded to Automated Awareness Safety System (AWAS), and the government is in talks to install more of these cameras to assist control speeding and other traffic violations.
According to Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Hasbi, investigations by the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) demonstrate that at sites where these cameras are deployed, road users' compliance levels are at 99%.

Datuk Hasbi further stated that 45 AWAS cameras are now functioning, with one awaiting repair and maintenance. He further noted that the installation of three signboards warning vehicles of the camera locations ahead acts as a reminder to slow down, and that the enforcement of AWAS cameras was not designed to trap road users.

The AWAS cameras are installed in high-traffic areas and accident-prone areas to ensure that drivers follow traffic laws. He further stated that because these cameras are operating around the clock, enforcement can be conducted out with less need on manpower.
Datuk Hasbi also added that the government is in talks to create special motorcycle lanes on highways in the country with studies already underway to identify suitable locations.
