More than 10,000 road accidents were reported along LLM-supervised highways, with about 200 fatalities involving motorcycles from Jan to May this year.
To reduce the risk of accidents, motorcycle lanes on all highways should be upgraded so that they can also be used by high-powered motorcycles, according to Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) chairman Datuk Seri Jalaluddin Alias.

He stated that there are roads, such as motorcycle lane entrances in Penang and Ipoh, Perak, that are deemed unsafe for high-powered motorcycles and could result in accidents, Jalaluddin told Berita Harian.

Aside from that, highway concessionaires should identify high-traffic areas where motorcycle lanes should be improved. Jalaluddin also stated that in order to increase highway user safety, all highways should be monitored for cleanliness, lighting, and the use of closed circuit television (CCTV).

Jalaluddin also urged that highway concessionaires should improve motorcycle lanes to account for accidents caused by bad weather, such as the risk of motorcyclists being hit when stopping under a flyover to take shelter from the rain.

From January to May of this year, more than 10,000 road accidents were reported along LLM-supervised highways, with about 200 fatalities involving motorcycles, he added. image.png

This is not a new request from authorities for highway concessionaires to improve motorcycle facilities, which includes two guidelines on motorcycle shelters and motorcycle lane geometry.
Based on motorcycle accident statistics, the Public Works Department (JKR) asked concessionaires in 2017 to build more motorcycle lanes and rain shelters, a view shared by the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) in 2018. image.png
