Peugeot Unveils New Panoramic i-Cockpit for the 3008 Ahead of Sept Debut
The 2024 Peugeot 3008 is set to make its global debut later this year in September. Prior to that, the French automaker has decided to unveil the 3008’s next-gen cabin design, dubbed as the Panoramic i-Cockpit.
This new cockpit layout is a next-gen iteration of the original Peugeot i-Cockpit, which was previewed back in 2010 on the Peugeot SR1 concept, before making its way into the production line on the 208 supermini.
Peugeot's new Panoramic i-Cockpit on the 2024 Peugeot 3008 GT
The Panoramic i-Cockpit features a massive 21-inch curved display that is mounted high up the front dash. Featuring a driver-centric layout, this curved display is slightly tilted towards the driver, with both the driver’s instrument and infotainment displays integrated into one big, wide screen.
This curved display is complemented by a smaller 10 touch-sensitive buttons that Peugeot refers to as the i-Toggle. These buttons are mounted on the central console of the 3008, where users can configure each button to suit the needs of the driver and front passenger. With this setup, Peugeot aims to declutter the 3008’s cockpit by reducing the number of conventional buttons and controls to a minimum.
The gear 'shifter' has been moved on to the front dash, leaving more space on the central console
This decluttering effort also involved the 3008’s gear shifter, as Peugeot decided to ditch the standard gear lever and opt for PRND buttons instead. These gear shift buttons are positioned just to the right of the push start button, which is located on the front dash. Doing so enables more room at the central console to fit with equipment like wireless charging pad, storage spaces and other driving-related control buttons.
Aside from that, the climate vents are also being slimmed down. Sitting below the curved display, both the central and driver-side vents are combined to create a more sleek and cohesive look.
The 3008's steering wheel is relatively small, but packed with touch-sensitive controls
Moving on to the steering wheel, it features a slew of touch-sensitive controls instead of physical buttons. Hopefully, Peugeot managed to get these touch controls to work just right, unlike the previous implementations attempted by other brands. More so, touch-sensitive controls have garnered rather negative reviews among users, so much so that even Volkswagen have vowed to revert back to physical buttons after receiving backlash from its customers.
In order to create a cosy atmosphere in this futuristic-looking cockpit design, Peugeot designers have fitted the 3008 cabin with an ambient lighting that spans across the entire width of the front dash and door panels. With up to eight colours to choose from, said ambient lighting is complemented by a real aluminium trim that reflects the light it emits.
The Peugeot Panoramic i-Cockpit will be installed in future Peugeot models in years to come, with the soon-to-be-launched Peugeot 3008 being the first model to sport one. Other models confirmed to get this futuristic cockpit design is the next-gen Peugeot 5008 three-row SUV, which will make its debut in years’ time.
