BYD Dolphin EV ROIs Open Ahead of July 28 Debut

In case you missed it, the BYD Dolphin is poised to be launched in Malaysia later this month. Ahead of its July 28th debut, Sime Darby Beyond Auto (SDBA), official importer and distributor of BYD brands in Malaysia has opened the registration of interest (ROI) for the EV hatch model.

Said ROI also includes registration for test drive slots of this EV hatch , which will take place from July 28 to 30 at the old wing car park of 1 Utama Shopping Centre. Those who are interested in test-driving this EV hatch can register at SDBA’s official website.
This ROI opening is followed by a social media post by BYD Malaysia’s official Instagram page, which features a rear-view of the Dolphin car, albeit partially draped in shadow. Unlike the previous teaser, this new image at least showcases several design bits of the Dolphin, notably its taillights illumination and partial view of its side profile.

Set to become BYD Malaysia’s second model after the Atto 3, the Malaysian-bound Dolphin’s specs will likely mirror ones we saw in Thailand. For the Thai market, the BYD Dolphin is available in two variants – Standard Range and Extended Range.

Priced at THB 699,999 (RM91,858), the former variant harnesses a 44.9-kWh Blade battery pack that drives its front-mounted (FWD) single motor setup rated at 94 PS and 180 NM as far as 410 KM (NEDC). Said battery supports AC charging rate up to 7 kW, while DC fast charging rate is capped at 60 kW.

Meanwhile, the ranger-topping Dolphin Extended Range gets a bigger 60.48-kWh Blade battery, which grants it a higher maximum EV range of 490 KM (NEDC). Sporting the similar single motor setup as the baseline variant, the Extended Range gets a higher 80 kW DC charging rate.

The BYD Dolphin will make its official Malaysian debut later on July 28, where it is poised to be one of the most affordable EVs available in the market. For reference, the current cheapest EV on sale in Malaysia is the Neta V, which commands a sub-RM100K price tag of only RM99,800 on-the-road.
Should SDBA manage to price the Dolphin in a similar region as the Neta V, this EV hatch will surely be a big hit amongst EV enthusiasts, while making EVs more accessible to the masses at the same time.
