According to the Korea Metal Workers' Union, Hyundai Motor Group has taken an important step towards gender equality by hiring female workers for its local production units for the first time in its history. Six of the 200 factory workers employed in July were women, although the exact gender ratio was not disclosed.

Hyundai currently employs roughly 28,000 factory workers, approximately 500 of whom are women. The majority of the female employees were formerly subcontracted workers who were promoted to permanent employees following favourable court rulings.

This latest recruitment drive marks Hyundai's first attempt to hire female plant workers through an open recruitment process. The union's women's committee issued a statement expressing their happiness with this milestone while also hoping for additional female workers to be among the 500 upcoming new hires. Hyundai intends to hire 700 plant workers by next year, with 400 vacancies to be filled this year.

Because of Hyundai's good working conditions and job security, technical roles inside the corporation are highly sought after by job seekers, with some referring to them as the "king of factory jobs." The company gives many advantages to its employees, which contributes to its status as an employer of choice, similar to Google.

The high demand for these positions was evident in March when the company's recruitment website experienced a significant increase in traffic, resulting in server slowdowns. Tens of thousands of candidates flocked to the website, with an estimated 180,000 submitting their applications online.

Overall, Hyundai Motor Group's decision to hire female employees through open recruiting constitutes a positive step towards gender equality and establishes a precedent for the South Korean automotive industry.
