MACC Confiscates 100 Luxury Cars Linked To Illegal Duty Evasion

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) seized around 100 luxury vehicles, including McLaren and Ferrari cars, after they were taken out of Langkawi, Kedah.
Owners of the cars are thought to be working with syndicates to bring out the vehicles from the island, obtaining invalid duty reductions that cost the government millions of dollars.
According to Harian Metro, investigations revealed that the involved syndicate smuggled these luxury vehicles out of Langkawi and dispersed them across the country. Some of these vehicles had been purchased as recently as 2015, and some had changed hands up to three times.
“MACC has gathered documentation on the vehicles in order to track them. Investigations will continue to recover the lost tax revenue caused by the syndicate," a source said, adding that MACC will track down the individuals who worked with the syndicate for duty reduction.
For the record, MACC seized 20 luxury cars and took down a vehicle duty-reduction syndicate in the first phase of the special operations conducted in the northern region on July 13, costing the government RM33 million in revenue.
Seven people were arrested in Kedah, and they were agents of a government agency who collaborated with car owners to falsify information in order to obtain duty reductions from Customs.
The MACC will conduct a second phase of its special operation to pursue those involved in the luxury car duty evasion scheme.
