Vehicle Production & Sales Dropped in June 2023 – MAA

MAA's press conference event yesterday, led by its new president, Mohd Shamsor Mohd Zain (centre)
The Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) press conference event yesterday saw the association presenting numerous sales reports, with the most notable one being the first-half of 2023 (1H2023) vehicle sales and production report. Aside from that, the association also presented the vehicle sales and production report for June 2023.

According to said report, both the vehicle production and sales in June 2023 have dropped slightly compared to the same month last year. For production, June 2023 saw a total of 58,051 units being produced, which is 3% less compared to June 2022’s production output of 59,885.

Vehicle sales, on the other hand, also experienced a slight drop of 2%, with only 62,569 units sold last month compared to last year’s 63,631 units. Same thing also can be reflected from June 2023’s total industry volume, which is 0.8% lower compared to May 2023, which was at 63,103 units.
However, the same can’t be said if we compare them to May 2023’s report, where the sales volume has actually increased from 61,795 in May to 62,569 in June – a 1.2% increase.

Aside from that, the year-to-date (YTD) sales volume for June 2023 has risen by 10.3% at 366,037 units compared to last year’s June YTD of only 331,746 units. MAA cited that the delivery of backlog orders, specifically orders taken during the SST tax exemption period has contributed much to this increase. YTD production volume has also increased by 14% in June 2023, rising from 317,933 to 362,535.

For June 2023, passenger cars once again lead the segment in sales volume, with over 199,194 units sold last month alone. This is followed by 4x4/SUV segment, with up to 97,979 units delivered in June this year.

For next month’s production and sales volumes, MAA forecasted that sales in July 2023 will be about the same level as June 2023, while production volume might see a slight increase due to the improved industry supply chain system.
