Alarming Number Of Rohingya Found Driving Without Licenses In Melaka - JPJ
Photo credit: The Star The Melaka Road Transport Department (JPJ) is concerned about the large number of Rohingya who are operating vehicles here without valid licences, according to The Star.
From the beginning of this year until July, according to department director Muhammad Firdaus Shariff, 63 members of the community had their cars seized for operating them without a licence.
He also said that the situation is troubling as it poses risk to other motorists while JPJ is only empowered to confiscate the vehicles and issue summonses.
Foreigners, according to Muhammad Firdaus, must understand that having a United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) card does not entitle them to drive or ride without a licence, and they must follow the rules in this country.
During an operation on Wednesday (Aug 9), he said 19 Rohingya were discovered driving without licences.
“My men managed to detect these foreigners within only two hours of the operation that started at 5pm and ended at 6.45pm along routes surrounding the Melaka Sentral bus terminal here.
“I believe we would be able to detect more of such cases if we conducted more operations throughout the state,” he said.
