Drivers Are Becoming More Security Conscious - eBay Car Security Index
According to new UK data, there has been a significant increase in the number of people looking for car security features to help reduce the risk of theft.
An analysis of eBay sales data between May 2022 and May 2023 revealed that searches for the phrase 'car security system' increased by 136% during that time period.
PA Media reported that the use of Faraday products, which obstruct signals between the car key and vehicle to help prevent keyless car thefts, has also sharply increased. eBay reports that searches for "Faraday box" have increased by 125% while those for "Faraday pouch" have increased by 76%.
Data from the UK served as the basis for the analysis, which also examined more traditional steering locks and car immobilisers.
"By studying purchases made on eBay and looking at just how many searches are made every day, it’s clear to see people want to do everything they can to protect their vehicle," Laura Richards, eBay category lead for Parts and Accessories, said.
"Having a car stolen can cause huge stress, but there are a huge range of items which can help prevent this, whether that’s to protect a cherished classic or a more modern model," Richards said.
“At a time when we see more reports of vehicles being stolen and more sophisticated methods, owners are looking at all the different accessories that can help protect their vehicle when it’s parked at their home.” According to AA Insurance Services' analysis of data from the Office of National Statistics, 130,389 people had their cars stolen in 2022, a 24.9% increase from the year before.

Since most alarm systems and immobilisers can be disregarded with today's keyless car systems, thieves can easily open a car and drive away using a homemade radio extension.
The radio connection between the key and the car can be extended up to 1 km by thieves using simple electronic components, regardless of whether the owner's home or jacket pocket contains the original key.
