G90-Gen BMW M5 Sedan Spied – Launching Soon?

The beloved BMW 5 Series has recently entered its latest generation, which includes an all-electric variant known as the BMW i5 for the first time. Aside from the standard variants, the Bavarian marque also promises that this G60-gen 5 Series will be followed by a full-blown M car, set to be launched some time later.
While BMW previously published two teaser images of the next-gen BMW M5 Touring, it seems that a photo of the BMW M5 sedan has been circulating online. Published by Instagram user @_imran_arshad, it shows the rear part of the new M5, with the car draped in what appears to be the M-specific San Marino Blue exterior hue.

Upon further inspection, you can clearly see that this alleged M5 sedan boasts similar design cues as the souped-up BMW i5 M60, with an addition of M signature quad tailpipes snuck between its angular rear diffuser. From here, you can also see the new M5 sporting flared-out wheel arches, as well as the special M sport wheels it rides on.

G60-gen BMW i5 M60, featuring M Performance parts
Unfortunately, said image only showcases the rear part of the new M5, leaving us with our imagination to guess what its front part looks like. However, judging from the M5’s rear-end similarity with the i5 M60, it is safe to say that the M5 sedan will look somewhat similar to its all-electric counterpart.
Fortunately, we’ve already got an idea pertaining to the new M5’s powertrain setup. No longer a fully-ICE M model, the G90-gen M5 will be a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) car, featuring a 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 under its hood – the same setup used on the BMW XM. While we didn’t get the exact power output, numerous reports suggest that it will boast no less than 700 HP.

Newly-launched BMW XM Red Label PHEV Super-SUV
For context, the range-topping BMW XM Label Red’s V8 PHEV setup delivers a total system output of 738 HP and over 1,000 NM of torque, so we can expect the M5 to have somewhat similar power output as this super-SUV. Battery details also aren’t available yet for the M5, but we’d suspect it’ll get a slightly smaller one compared to the XM Label Red's 29.5-kWh unit, which grants it with a maximum EV range of 48 KM.

Official teaser images of the next-gen BMW M5 Touring
Aside from the sedan version, the next-gen M5 will also come in a Touring station wagon variant, where the German automaker previously published several teaser images of the model. Both M5 models are expected to make its debut in a few month’s time, with the M5 Touring coming later in 2024.
