data.gov.my, 24/7 Data Access For All - JPJ Vehicle Registration Data Available

Finally, the Malaysian government, in pursuit of its transparency vision, developed its very own open data site, data.gov.my, which is intended to collect data from numerous government departments, allowing citizens 24/7 access to any data, including taxation, automobile, immigration, and more. These data would be useful to those looking for information, performing research or even to integrate via API into any app. This is in par with the nation's vision to be a premier data-driven country in the world.
We at CariCarz were able to experiment with the site, particularly the Road Transport Department (JPJ) data site. At first sight, the data appears to be on the correct track, yet we discovered that it is still incomplete. For example, BYD data only reveals numbers for the BYD E6 and Dolphin, with no information available for the hugely popular BYD Atto 3. Some brands, such as Porsche, had models such as Wira and Iswara misclassified under it. JPJ would need to thoroughly go through the site to ensure that the data provided is correct and appropriate if the government's goal of transparency is to be met.

In any case, JPJ's dashboard would offer insight into car make and model popularity listing data based on actual vehicle registration data. JPJ hopes that the statistics presented will appeal to all automotive lovers wishing to check out the newest in terms of vehicle popularity that may affect their purchasing decision. Data tabulated are from the year 2000 to the present.
Data presented in this dashboard are from both new and recon vehicles based on the year it is registered here in Malaysia NOT the year it is manufactured. From the somewhat incomplete data that we are presented with (be patient, it's a new dashboard so we are sure it would be updated in due time) we decided to pull the number of EV sold so far in Malaysia. From the 24 models available in the dashboard from various brands, we managed to pull a total of 6,438 EV’s registered in Malaysia since 2000. Do keep in mind volume models like the BYD Atto 3 and others are still not present in the dashboard at the time of print.

To make it more interesting, we used the dashboard to pull data of both the BMW iX and Mercedes Benz EQC just as a compare to play around and we were surprised that the EQC did not fare well against the iX where there were only 96 EQC’s registered to date while the iX triumphed with a staggering 1856 units on road. Mercedes would have to seriously look into why it's losing share in its transition models moving towards EV adoption.

Furthermore, with this dashboard, Malaysians would now be able to have a rough gauge when it comes to sales volume announced by brands in order to paint a nicer picture when it comes to its sales and popularity. Why don’t you play around with it and drop us a comment if you find any discrepancy in announced versus actual data.
