Asian Compact Sedan Design Challenge 2023 Winners Crowned
The “Asian Compact Sedan Design Challenge 2023” (ACSDC) has just crowned its winners with 93 entries from 7 countries for its inaugural run.
Co-organized by Perodua and the Malaysia Design Council (MRM), the ACSDC 2023 is a sedan design competition open to both professional and student designers in Asia. Among the competitors are those from Indonesia, Japan, the Philippines, Singapore, Iran, Japan, India, and Malaysia.
“The number of entries and their countries of origins are encouraging as Perodua’s and MRM’s presence outside Malaysia is limited,” Dato’ Sri Zainal Abidin Ahmad, Perodua President and Chief Executive Officer said.
With his "Payung" concept car, Malaysian Kenny Chan won the professional category of the ACSDC 2023 competition. The car's design proportions exhibit dynamic with a fastback silhouette, and its strong and stable body character contributes to its well-balanced appearance, as stated by Chief Judge Muhammad Zamuren Musa.
Meanwhile, Bryan Teh Yea Quan of Asia Pacific University (APU) in Malaysia won the student category with his unique interpretation of a sporty sedan.
Dato’ Sri Zainal Abidin Ahmad said that the competition provides Perodua with valuable insights into the definition and perception of sedans, as these vary across different countries.
“Malaysians see it as a practical vehicle while other countries may see it more of a status symbol, and by having this competition, we can see where we can merge the two ideas into one,” he added.
Husaini Ismail, director of MRM, stated that in addition to encouraging designers to test their abilities, this competition exposes them to various design philosophies from around the globe.
