BYD Next-Gen Blade Battery Expected This Year
Photo: CarNewsChina. The second-generation Blade battery from BYD battery subsidiary FinDreams will be launched later this year, possibly in August. The energy density of the new battery, which is anticipated to reach 190 Wh/kg, will be one of the main improvements, according to CarNewsChina.com.
By enabling more affordable lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries with power densities comparable to nickel cobalt manganese (NCM) batteries, the Blade battery, first introduced in 2020, completely changed the electric vehicle (EV) market.
This was done by arranging the individual cells into a blade like arrangement within the battery packs hence the name Blade battery,” says CarNewsChina.com.
“Such an arrangement increased the space utilisation by 50% compared to existing LFP batteries at the time.”
BYD chairman Wang Chuanfu disclosed the new battery's development during a meeting. He said that the new Blade battery will be smaller, lighter, and require less power per 100 kilometers for the same endurance.
The new Blade battery is said to help EVs pass the 1000 km China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC), which could enable them to compete with solid-state batteries like those used in the Nio.
The Blade battery, according to BYD, is far safer than many other kinds, and the upcoming model might contribute to the reduced cost of EVs.
According to CarNewsChina, cars equipped with BYD's fifth generation DM-i plug-in hybrid system should be able to reach a combined range of almost 2000 kilometers.
Meanwhile, Electrek claims that the Blade battery, which is found in the majority of BYD models like the Seagull, Dolphin, and Atto 3, is a key factor in BYD's success and powers Tesla, Ford, Kia, Hyundai, Toyota, and other well-known EVs from major automakers.
