The New Mercedes-AMG GT63 S E Performance is the Quickest Merc Ever

The second-gen Mercedes-AMG GT63 S E Performance breaks cover as the quickest Merc ever.
The second-gen Mercedes-AMG GT has finally gotten a souped-up, range-topping model known as the GT63 S E Performance. Featuring the same biturbo V8 plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain as its four-door twin, the new GT63 is touted as the quickest Merc on Earth.

The two-door GT63 S E Performance gets the same V8 PHEV setup as its four-door twin with over 800 HP.
A quick refresher on the GT63’s PHEV setup, it comprises a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol mill rated at 603 HP by itself, which is then mated to a rear-mounted PHEV electric motor that adds another 201 HP. As a result, the whole PHEV system boasts a total system output of 805 HP and a whopping 1,420 NM, allowing it to blast from nought to 100 KM/H in just 2.8 seconds—faster than the AMG One hypercar.
However, the AMG One still won in the top-end range, with the new AMG GT63 S E Performance’s V-Max capped at only 320 KM/H, while said hypercar is capped higher at 353 KM/H.

Similar to its predecessor, the new AMG GT63 S E Performance’s PHEV powertrain is also mated to Merc’s proprietary 4Matic+ all-wheel drive (AWD) system with a mechanical limited-slip differential (LSD) at the rear, with a nine-speed AMG Speedshift MCT 9G gearbox facilitating the power delivery.
Meanwhile, its rear electric motor is managed by a two-speed transmission, while being juiced by a small 6.1-kWh battery pack that is mounted on the rear axle for better weight distribution. Said battery is good enough to grant the AMG GT63 S E Performance with 13 KM of EV-only range, while it can be charged via both the AC outlet and four levels of regenerative braking.

AMG-specific mechanical parts like the AMG Active Ride control damper setup and AMG ceramic composite brakes are all present on this flagship AMG GT.
Being the flagship model of the AMG GT range, the new AMG GT63 S E Performance comes equipped with a slew of performance enhancements over its standard twin. Key features include the AMG Active Ride Control suspensions with semi-active roll stabilisation and rear axle steering, AMG ceramic composite brakes, and the AMG Dynamic Select, which offers eight driving modes for this super GT – Electric, Battery Hold, Comfort, Slippery, Sport, Sport+, Race, and Individual.

On the visual front, the new AMG GT63 shares the same body kit as both the non-hybrid GT63 and 53 variants, with the exception of the charging port module on its rear bumper and the E Performance badge on the fenders. On top of its stylish body kit, the GT63 PHEV also comes standard with active aero parts like the rear spoiler that has been specifically tuned to the car and its PHEV powertrain.

On board, the GT63 PHEV comes with the same 2+2 cabin layout, with the front two AMG Sport seats featuring power adjustments and up to three massage programmes. Aside from the latest MBUX infotainment display with PHEV and AMG-specific graphics, the cabin is also customisable with tons of upholstery and trim options via Merc’s Manufaktur bespoke programme.

The all-new, second-gen Mercedes-AMG GT63 S E Performance is slated to make its arrival in selected markets like Europe and North America later this year. With no price announcement made by Mercedes-Benz for now, we can expect this super-PHEV GT to fetch higher premiums than its full ICE siblings.
