Following our report on the vehicle fire, which we suspect is related to the fuel smuggling syndicate, Bernama recently reported that the country experienced an estimated RM1.2 million in subsidised diesel 'leakage' daily. This is due to the smuggling activities involving foreign vehicles at Immigration, Customs, Quarantine, and Security (ICQS) Complex.

This declaration was given by Aedy Fadly Ramli, Deputy Director General (Planning and Operations) of the Road Transport Department (JPJ), after the department confiscated 18 vehicles under Operation Tangki in Kuala Muda, Kota Setar, and the ICQS from May 15.

The daily leakage was detected throughout five days of operations using modified vehicles such as pick-up trucks and lorries loaded with additional tanks. According to Aedy Fadly, "During the operation, we found that most foreign vehicles had altered their tanks to smuggle diesel into neighbouring countries, making almost five trips a day to carry out these illegal activities."

The significant amount of diesel leakage prompted the JPJ to step up efforts to identify such vehicles and avoid further losses. Additionally, some individuals drove private vehicles with registration numbers from neighbouring nations.

Starting that week, national operations were initiated in response to the Ministry of Transport’s direction to combat subsidised diesel smuggling.
