B2 to B Full Licence Auto-Upgrade Will Be Announced Soon – MoT
The Ministry of Transport will make an announcement regarding the automatic licence upgrade from B2 to B Full.
The Ministry of Transport (MoT) is set to make an announcement soon regarding the automatic upgrade of the Malaysian motorcycle licence from B2 (below 250 CC) to B Full (unlimited capacity). A statement was made by its minister, YB Anthony Loke, during his site visit to the new LRT3 station yesterday.
As reported by Utusan Malaysia, Loke said the cabinet has made a decision regarding this auto-upgrade matter, with an official announcement set to be made soon.
“A decision has been made, but I will be announcing it later, not today,” said Loke when speaking to reporters.
The proposal for an auto-upgrade from B2 licence to B Full was instantly mooted by the Deputy Prime Minister YAB Dato’ Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is also the Minister of Rural and Regional Development. Zahid’s proposal entails that B2 licence holders should receive an automatic upgrade to the B Full category after they reach a certain number of years, citing that the rider would’ve gained enough riding experience by that time.
Besides the ownership period of the B2 licence, Zahid’s proposal also entails that there should be a minimum age requirement for this auto-upgrade.
Prior to Zahid’s proposal, a separate proposal was initially made by the Superbikers Association Malaysia (SAM), where the association asked for an automatic licence upgrade after three years of riding with the B2 licence, provided that the rider did not incur any penalties or demerits during that period.
However, this auto-upgrade proposal has also received some backlash, including one from the Malaysian Driving Institute Association (PIMA). The association’s president, Mat Aris Bakar, warned that this action might regress the nation's vehicle licensing system because it involved a rider's competency, plus it added the possibility of more motorcycle-related accidents occurring in the future.
