Making its ASEAN regional debut in Singapore is the all-new BMW i5 Touring sporty EV wagon. Is Malaysia next?

Several months after making its debut, the enigmatic G61-gen BMW i5 Touring EV wagon has finally made its ASEAN debut in Singapore today. For the Island Republic market, the i5 Touring wagon arrives in a sole eDrive40 variant, which boasts similar powertrain specs as its saloon twin that debuted in our market.

The i5 eDrive40 Touring gets the same single-motor RWD powertrain setup as its saloon twin.

This means that the Singapore-bound i5 eDrive40 Touring gets the same single-motor RWD setup as its sedan twin, boasting a total system output of 335 HP (250 kW) and 430 NM. This setup allows a 0-100 KM/H sprint to be completed in just 6.1 seconds, while its V-Max is capped electronically at 193 KM/H.

Similarly, the i5 eDrive40 Touring also gets an 81.2-kWh battery pack with a 400-volt architecture that supplies the EV wagon with up to 548 KM of WLTP range. Charging-wise, the Singapore-spec i5 eDrive40 Touring can support both AC and DC charging methods capped at 22 kW and 205 kW, respectively.

The Singapore-spec BMW i5 eDrive40 Touring comes standard in the M Sport Package.

On the design front, the i5 eDrive40 Touring in Singapore comes standard with the M Sport Package, which adds a slew of sporty features and design touches to this already sporty-looking fast wagon. Key M Sport features include the horizontal slats on its kidney front grille surrounded by the BMW Iconic Glow LED, M Sport emblems on its front fenders, high-gloss black finishing on some exterior parts, including the side mirror caps, and the 20-inch M aerodynamic wheels.

Besides the cosmetic features, the M Sport Package also grants the i5 wagon the M Sport suspension system, which lowers the car’s ride height by 8 MM compared to the standard model.

On board, the Singapore-spec i5 wagon gets the same cabin layout as its sedan twin, albeit featuring some key features that are omitted from our market. Key pieces of equipment present here include the BMW Curved Display setup powered by BMW OS 8.5, a dedicated head-up display (HUD), Veganza man-made leather upholstery, M-badged leather steering wheel, and a 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, which can be upgraded to a more premium 18-speaker setup from Bowers & Wilkins.

On top of the standard BMW Live Cockpit Professional suite, the Singapore-spec i5 wagon’s infotainment system also features an integrated 5G connectivity function and the AirConsole service, which allows users to stream videos and play video games via the infotainment screen.

Thanks to its extended roofline, the i5 Touring boasts an extra layer of practicality over its saloon twin. Its standard boot space is measured at 570 litres, which can be expanded to 1,700 litres once you fold down the rear seats.

Including the Certificate of Entitlement (COE) fees, the all-new BMW i5 eDrive40 Touring is priced at SGD 399,888 (RM1.389 million) for the Singaporean market. Included with said price are a complimentary 22 kW BMW Wallbox home charger plus a free subscription package of 10,000 kWh over 3 years at Shell Recharge stations with no monthly cap for charging.

Unlike our local market, Singaporeans seem to have a deeper appreciation for fast wagons, with the city-state receiving a slew of BMW Touring models prior to the i5 Touring’s debut, including both the G21 3 Series Touring and the M3 Touring. Besides Volvo with the V60 Recharge T8, other European brands, including BMW, have yet to debut any wagon models in recent years, with our market still bucking off the global SUV trend.
