Proton recently announced it broke ground to expand its stamping facilities in Tanjong Malim with the addition of Stamping E-Line and F-Line. The addition of these two new lines are in line with the aim to increase the volume of parts stamping at the Proton Tanjong Malim plant, which is set to take over the production of the Proton Saga by 2026.

With RM253 million invested, the project is intended to accommodate both the anticipated release of new models and the increasing volume of manufacturing. This expansion follows the opening of the D-Line stamping plant on March 14, 2023.

During the groundbreaking ceremony, Proton CEO Dr. Li Chunrong emphasised the importance of the new stamping lines to the company's future growth. “The addition of the parts stamping E-Line and F-Line is crucial for Proton’s volume expansion plans. It provides us with the flexibility to ramp up production and meet market demand.”

He further added that from the beginning of 2023 to June 2024, the Tanjong Malim plant has stamped 6,067,064 components, including 395,211 from the new D-Line. This number is expected to increase significantly once the Proton Saga production is relocated to Tanjung Malim from Shah Alam.

The E-Line will feature a four-stage stamping process with a 1,600-tonne stamping machine and three 800-tonne machines while the F-Line will have a five-stage process utilising a 2,000-tonne, a 1,200-tonne and three 1,000-tonne stamping machines.

In addition, IR 4.0 technology will be employed for these new lines to improve the quality of parts produced by using real-time data and machine learning, and robots will be used to move parts between workstations.

By lowering Proton’s need on imported parts, the new stamping lines should improve local parts supply while protecting the company from future disruptions in global trade. Furthermore this aligns with the government's objective of increasing local involvement in the automotive sector by creating jobs at different levels.

Moreover, this investment will support the growth of the Automotive High Tech Valley (AHTV) and strengthen Tanjong Malim's competency.
