As part of a deliberate effort to lower traffic accidents, the Road Transport Department (JPJ) has chosen to place Automated Enforcement System (AES) cameras in high-accident zones close to the Menora Tunnel in Kuala Kangsar, along the PLUS highway.

The State Infrastructure, Energy, Water, and Public Transport Committee Chairman, Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin, stressed that the goal of this enforcement action is to guarantee that drivers obey speed limits in areas that pose a risk to public safety.

He went on to say that research carried out by pertinent organisations, such as PLUS, showed that the best speed restriction for these accident hotspots is 80 km/h, which effectively lowers the danger of accidents brought on by speeding and other moving infractions.

Additionally, Mohammad Nizar dispelled rumours that the government is only using the installation of AES cameras close to the Menora Tunnel as a means of generating income.

He went on to highlight that speed plays a big role in traffic accidents and that the authorities intend to see a discernible decrease in speeding events by enforcing stricter speed restrictions in certain locations.

Adding to this, Perak JPJ Director, Mohammad Yusoff Abustan assured that the locations selected for AES cameras were not chosen arbitrarily as each site had undergone thorough study before any installation took place.

This includes gazetting the agreed speed limit based on the detailed findings," he clarified. Mohammad Yusoff also went on to add, "Our objective is to ensure drivers comply with the established speed limits and traffic signals, thereby enhancing road safety in these high-risk zones."
